Carry on Caravanning @ 8pm on Channel 5 (no markings to say it's a repeat). One-off documentary profiling British caravan owners. May be worth seeing. ;)

Sadly the media can't resits having a little dig by describing us as 'defying angry drivers' because we have the audacity to use the roads that we help to pay for.
The premise appears to be that somehow we are doing something wrong.

Yes I noticed this and have set it to record.

It's always in the back of my mind when towing that I'm not holding anyone up, but as more often than not I'm doing the legal limit and if not I'll drop into a layby now and then and let them go, after all as Parksy says we pay road tax too.

I recorded it and watched this morning, I found it quite funny, it was just a light hearted look at caravaning, made me chuckle in places anyway, let's face it probably most of us if we're honest would have extracted the urine out of campers and caravaners before we tried it for ourselves and found to our surprise it was actually a great hobby and an excellent way to relax, at least it wasn't anti caravaning and there's far worse rubbish on TV.

Airstream followers being seduced by the UK Agent and Salesman was a laugh. Charm extracted 80k from mother and daughter who had nothing better to do with money, other than cherish their doggies on white fur seat covers !
Not jealous, really, just amazed at gullibility.
And the other ralliests seemed to be mixed bunch, with DJ's worn for dinner, drinking shorts from plastic shots containers, playing silly games, generally performing for the cameras, and learning in the process of the weekend, the charms of cassette emptying and outdoor cooking and lap eating.
Sorry, I am being snobbish, but just not my style of living, let alone caravanning.

What an absolute load of rubbish this programme was.

For me it was just a stereo typically look at Caravanning.

Just seemed to film, idiots and stuck up idiots.

Just gutted I wasted my time watching it to the end!

I started to watch this programme, and frankly I was very disappointed. so I gave up after the first commercial break.

They did make the point that caravanning has about a £6 billion turnover in the UK This should not be trivialised. So why do they always seem to insist on finding the wackiest people to film? Its not representative. It's not doing the subjects or the industry any favours.

Caravanning at the best of times is misunderstood by swathes of non caravanners, and the film producers have again dumbed down a serious subject matter.

How much better it would have been if the film company had done a more serious and informative piece of work, that shows how the vast majority of caravanners are responsible sensible people, and how caravanning can be a truly valid alternative to package holidays abroad.

I'm no fan of television programmes that routinely belittle and stereotype caravanners to make us look like numpties, and although this programme was by no means the worst example it did seek out the eccentrics and the play acting fame hungry attention seekers in an attempt to make 'interesting viewing' for the uneducated masses who want light entertainment rather than a true documentary programme.
Reading between the lines it looked to me as though the the mother with the Airstream was pandering to her daughters wishes, especially when the daughter co-opted Mr Smarmy Salesman at the Airstream gathering to persuade her mother to part with more of the inheritance wedge.
It's better than paying the money as death duties I suppose
To be fair I've seen much worse hatchet jobs done against us, so although the programme didn't try to redress some of the balance by highlighting the low accident statistics and courteous responsible drivers who tow caravans it did show that caravanning these days can be far removed from the old days of the campiing gaz stove and bucket and chuck it loo.
Edit: I'm not sure what the tooting and waving was all about, the lonely guy with only a soft toy for company probably insigated it when it became obvious to him that perhaps fellow ralliers avoided him and his stuffed monkey like the plague as he sang a Kumbaya solo at a lonely campfire in the middle of nowhere
