Charging caravan battery from tow-car

I,ve recently bought an Abbey GTS 418 and the salesman informed me that when the tow-car is hooked to the caravan via the 12s socket on the car [and the car is running] that the tow-car will charge the caravan battery.

I question this as I thought that this provided power only to the caravan and that you had to have your car modified with a relay to actually put charge into the battery.

Can anyone shed any light on this, am I right or was the salesman right?

I think you find this only applies to caravans manufactured before 1998. The 12S pin 2 is no longer used for this on more modern caravans.

It is still charged because the habitation relay in post 1996ish vans cuts off the internal 12V supply and also changes the green wire (pin 4) from power feed on site to battery charging en route.

It will all depend on the car being wired for the 12S correctly and the necessary relays being installed in the car.
