Check your driving licence

I recently received a 'heads - up' message from a friend regarding my photo driving licence. It is now over 10 years since they were first introduced and many have now expired; the date of expiry is shown as 4b on the photo side of the licence. When it expires you must renew it at a cost of £17.50 and although renewal letters are sent, if the records at the DVLA are not accurate, you may not receive any notification. Apparently only about three-quarters of the licences that have now expired have actually been renewed. The old paper licences were valid until the age of 70 and many motorists believe that still to be the case; it isn't! (I've checked mine and it expires in three months.)

Thanks Ron, I will keep an eye on that, as i have checked mine and find it expires next March. I had forgotten they were only valid for 10 years.

Not sure about the charge though, I have looked on the DVLA site and the charges are only for renewing a photo (

Yes, you do, and it has to be one taken within the last month when applying.

Am I right in thinking there is no legal requirement to have one? I think they are only useful as proof of ID at banks and such like.Or for getting in pubs if you are young !!

Thinking of expiry dates bear in mind that the European Health Insurance Card also has an expiry date - though I do not think any will have expired as yet.

Sorry Mike E Just had to renew my EHIC card after 5 years. Easy to do either on line, by phone or via application form from PO if one is still open near you.

No cost ,no photo. How long will that last re renwing of driving photos. My driving license runs out just 6 months before 70th Birthday so will have to pay twice within one year. By then the price will alos have increased. You cannot win
