Chemical Toilet disposal

Any suggestions? We're having some building work done and are moving out to the van. Campsites are fine with chemical disposal points, but what can we do if we're at home? Trekking back to the house in the middle of the night isn't really an option, but we can get access to our toilet in the day.

It may be helpful or a problem, but we're not on mains sewerage and have our own septic tank. Would it be OK to use one of the "green" non-formaldehyde solutions be OK, and to empty that down the house pan and so to the septic tank?

The contents of a chemical toilet should be treated the same as conventional sewerage. Most campsites are connected to mains drainage and the contents of all their porta-pottis go straight into the public sewer. For those campsites not on main drains, it just goes into a septic tank like yours but larger.

You can use any of the caravan-type chemicals although I would advocate non-formaldehyde types as they're better for the environment and less risky to your own health.

Hi Matthew

Just told Andy about a new range of chemicals called Kemdirect for his Aquaroll but one of the other products is for the toilet.

It is a granular biodegradable product for use top and bottom so no more two bottles of fluid. But the great benefit is that it has no smell or dye and so no staining of fingers and toilet.

This means that you get no chemical smell in the caravan and the contents are broken down so when you pour away you get no waste, matter or paper if used correctly. If you want a smell in your toilet you can put a block in like in your bathroom in the house and a smell you like.

It can be disposed off easily into an ordinary toilet as there is no dye and there should only be coloured water.

You can empty into septic tanks as it is one of the most biodegradable on the market.

It is beter than the green and Hans should know he helped develop the fluids!

Hope this helps you to find a suitable one.

Joyce
