CL Cancellations

I have had to cancel a bankholiday C.L. site in Banwell Somerset because of a bereavement. Please be aware that this owner, although did not tell me at the time of booking, wants paid in full for any cancellations. I have been in touch with the Caravan Club who tell me that he cannot make me pay this. I had to put up with the owner ranting and raving about people like me (who book several sites then go around cancelling them) I have been a caravan club owner for 20 years and never been spoken like before at any time. Maybe it would be best if we asked when booking the penalties for any cancellations.

Giving 7 days notice of cancellation is not a lot and I can understand the CL being annoyed as he has lost revenue if nobody else takes up the space. August Bank holiday is probably the one time that he has a chance of guaranteeing a full house... but not at the last minute. CL's have overheads and they have to pay bills just like everyone else. Agreed though , the CC should make it clear that no shows and cancellations are liable for a fee..

We recently cancelled a CL for the beginning of October, giving a full 2 months notice. We just decided we didn't want to go as we have booked an holiday abroad instead. I was told that there would not be a charge if they filled it. Now that I think is also interesting. How many bookings would they have for October ? Is 2 months a reasonable notice period ?

I guess at the end of the day, maybe we should be paying a deposit then there would be no arguments.

I can understand the cl owners side of things as well. I got the impression he was frustrated about all the other cancellations that he had had. I have paid deposits for other C.L. sites and never minded doing this. What this owner said was for me to pop the cheque in the post and if he filled the pitch he would not cash it, but I do have to say I would never know whether this was filled or not.

I love the CLs and can understand their profit margins are very slim indeed , hence a lat ecasncellation , no matter the reason, will cause the CL owner financial loss.

Realistically when we book to go abroad the majority of us take out travel insurance to cover the very contingency you unfortunately found yourself in. In this regard I have no doubt the travel company would have been fully paid and you would have had a successfull claim.

Thus in fairness I find it hard to understand why any of us think the CL owner should be treated any differently??

In fact it infuriates me that I know for a fact a lot of CC members book numerous weekends at Grinlow Buxton and regularly cancel. So when I want to book a week or more I have to do so well in advance.

Now the CC do not charge for late cancellations and I have to admit I never want that changed. But please can we all accept the CLs are different and offer us excellent very cheap holidays.

Maybe the CC could offer us all some form of insurance policy??

Cheers

Alan

Mrs Chrisbee and myself are taking our grandchildren away on their first caravan adventure on bank holiday monday for 5 days. I left it late to book and could not get a cl in the south east with EHU that will take dogs for either of the next 2 week ends. I would of course have prefered to include at least one w/e in the holiday. Whilst some people have valid reasons to cancel, and I symathise with them,I can understand the frustration of CL owners having empty pitches and lost revenue after turning away prospective customers because all pitches are booked weeks in advance.

When on the rare occasions I have had to cancel any caravan sites, private or caravan club I have only ever lost my deposit.

I do sympathise with Mr Chrisbee as I spent a whole two days trying to find a CL site that was not full when booking. Even in my own region of Suffolk you need to start booking now for weekends for next year.

If we have rung a site and its been fully booked They always keep our number and phone if a cancellation comes in

I like the C&CC as they do concessions for over 55's Brill means we can go away more often

I use CC cl's as well

Great idea Rita. I have asked the Caravan Club on occasions to do this but they weren't to happy, just asked me to keep phoning. The C.L. sites in our region don't need to do this as they know as soon as someone cancels they will be able to book it out again almost immediatly.

We have never taken a deposit. Makes life far to complicated.

We had a cancelation today for the weekend due to illness. but within an hour the pitch was taken. the main problem is you take a booking for 3/4 nights and have to turn away bookings for 2 weeks because we are full for the first 3 nights.
