i can see both sides of the story - it was funny, hubby was laughing his socks off.

although i can see it from the other side of the coin - for the neutral viewers with no opinion formed already on caravanners could deem us to be a load of over the hill dimwits, driving 20 mph on the roads, its JUST US holding up all the traffic, it wasnt exactly encouraging anyone to take up the hobby was it?!

at the end of the day, we love our caravan, im 33 and not over the hill and i dont care whether anyone else likes it or not!

I thought the show was very funny (some of the situations were rather reminiscent of our first outing except it took us far longer to get the awning up)and am actually a great fan of Mr.Clarkson and the Top Gear show however last nights show should have come with a BBC Health Warning. A few observations -

Do a three point turn in a lane blocking trafic?

It's safe to reverse a van without someone watching the rear?

Look for water to throw on burning chip fat?

Go back into a burning van to rescue belongings?

Yes all very funny but sending rather dangerous messages. Jeremy should have the guts to do it again but this time show how to handle such situations correctly and safely.

Just a couple of points, you have to feel sorry for the Top Gear crew, they obviously mixed up their Kias, got a Cerato instead of a Sorrento, secondly, does anybody know where I can get one of those signs for the back window of the caravan that they were using.

OK so it was a wind up, but how many of us can say that we haven't done some of those things

I have had trouble in a petrol station (luckily no damage to the van)

I have taken the wrong direction & had to turn (not a 3 point on a busy road)

SWMBO often jumps into the van 'I jsust need to get ***'

Yes we have stowed things badly & caused mayhem (washing up liguid all ovrt the floor

Some of us are not that good at reversing & go single handed

Caravan fires do happen

Overloaded tow cars are fairly common - see the posts

Most of these things have happened to me, or I have seen them

Not all on one trip mind

Exageration of the truth is the basis of comedy & someone is always the butt of a joke

This time it's us

Lets enjoy, but get our own back - perhaps start a topic on Clatkson jokes

CLARKSON IS A GOD !!

James May & The Hamster are Demi-Gods

There really are some miserable old sods on here with a total lack of a sense of humour ;-0

There are some old duffers who give us caravanners a bad name, it is possble to be a mid 30's caravanner and a petrolhead - I know, cos I am one.

Am off to Hockenheim with the van on Monday for the German GP - then Monza in September, again with the caravan, for the Italian GP.

Be happy - we are all different - enjoy what you do & stop winging about others.

Sorry LB I did find some of nicks comments quite funny.. But personal digs are not so funny from either side. But I do have to say you do need a sense of humour tranfusion because more people found the Top Gear item funny or very funny. In fact on the UK campsite forum there have not been any who feel as stongly as some of the ultra conservative members here. As I said before people who say they have a sense of humor rarely do have a good sense of humour. Posting jokes is not a good way of showing that either.. It is more about personal things which are not always too good into a positive just like many of the great comedians do. Spike Milligan, Laurel and Hardy, John Cleese, Peter Sellers and then shows like the young ones and Not the nine o'clock news all used the same type of humour at the expense of both themselves and others to make a living... That item was the same, the only difference is the show is not classed as a comedy show. But every week they do the same fuuny things just to make it interesting. Like seeing how much it would take to stop the pickup truck from running. Just because it has touched something you love doing is not going to stop it from being funny for thousands of people. I suggest you look at what pulling a van really means for the majority of people here and it has nothing to do with the item Top Gear was showing. I go out not to sit in a field as they say I go to enjoy the places we visit. Like I said mountain biking, Skiing, Jet skiing, racing motorcycles as well as walking and taking the dog for walks. I use the time away to enjoy what the country side has to offer even though I live surrounded by countryside with farms and a 250 common for a back garden, literally !

Do you just sit in a field or spend all of your time either inside or sitting outside of your van??? I personally think you do not........ I could be wrong. But for me the van is a place to eat and sleep and relax after a day enjoying a day in the country, just like a hotel.

So Just get over the Top Gear item and picking on someone elses sense of humour just because it is not the same as yours. Hell if we all had the same sense of humour we would all still be watching The wheel tappers and shunters club !!! Telling Jokes by standup comics are not the only way to be funny, hence the sitcom.

Maybe just a coincidendence but four people who post jokes etc. on this forum on a regular basis think it was a load of childish crap yet two people who have never posted a humourous post thinks it was hilarious - hmmmm - oh well - just an observation ;O) hehheh!
Sorry M'lord has it also occurred to you that you might not be as funny as you think you are.

I think that what is at the heart of the problem here is whether TopGear is seen as a serious motoring programme. In recent years this has not been the case and the programme has been completely dumbed down. If everyone accepts that TG is entertainment rather than educational then there is no argument that the "sketch" was funny. However, there are a lot of people out there who take everything they say as gospel.

In a fair world they would do another serious piece on caravanning but that's as likely to happen as me being able to fly to the moon.

There also seems to be a lot of postings on this thread that imply that once you pass 40 you loose all sense of humour and become old farts. Granted, this is sometimes the case, but there are some 20 somethings who are "20 going on 60".

At the age of 57 I have been attending motor sport events since I was 15, still do track days and consider myself a petrolhead so please don't assume that life ends at 40.

Paul,

Fully agree. Anyone who thought this was going to be a serious article, or that a weekend away would chage Clarksons mind about caravans needs to get a life. Very funny, we have all made mistakes, lets just not take things too seriously.

David W I have never or do not intend to state that I am funny - if I have could you please enlighten me, I apologise now in advance if I have. When I post on any subject it is for the individual to decide and on that point I have had more feedback than your goodself. Now go back to your A Frame covers and caravan steps topics and try to lighten up a little. You are a long time dead David W and lifes not as bad as you make out surely ;O) All I try to do is take the seriousness out of the forum - if it doesn't work for you I'm sorry, but tough hehheh!

For those who chose to take the program seriously the Caravan Club Press Release is quite interesting ... they obviously did

http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/News/Current Club News/17 July 2006 Statement regarding Top Gear.htm
Hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by posting the link

Humour is subjective but looking at the posts on this thread it appears that 16 people found the programme amusing and six didn't. That can prove whatever you want it to prove depending on which side of the fence you are sitting.

The only serious point raised in the Caravan Club response is who is right in relation to powering out of 'snaking'. From reading various threads in this and other forums it would appear that although Clarkson is theoretically right in the practice it is impossible with the majority of car/caravan combinations, but I don't pretend to be an engineer .

At the end of the day it was TV Entertainment and I have yet to see a program that appeals equally to everybody.

I can confess to powering out of a snake. I was overtaking a car transporter (yes, I know now) on a downhill stretch of the M1 (yes, I know now) and the first thing that came into my head was to stab my foot down hard just to get out of the pull of the transporter. This was very early days in my towing, but only a couple of years ago and luckily it worked - the outfit became steady very quickly. Outfit was Bailey Ranger 510 and BMW Touring 2.0 diesel. Frightened the s**t out of me and my wife and haven't tried to overtake a transporter downhill since (no more snakes either).

Regards

Ken

If you have ample power use it, if not back off and then accelerate gently. No more snake.

As`with Ken the same happen to us and by hitting the accelerator on the Volvo 2.4 diesel removed the snake.

Howeve4r thsi can be debated for hours on end and no conclusion will be reached.

Although it was obviously vary tongue in cheek and a bit funny in places, there will be people stupid enough to follow in the foot steps of these bunch of tw*ts . I'd like to see how funny they'd find it if that badly damaged towbar failed and the caravan detached from the car killing a family coming in the other direction! Even with the breakaway cable attached it will still skid some distance before stopping.

My goodness some of you lot are really sad! - I sat watching it with a load of other caravanners on a campsite on a portable TV running off a small generator and we all laughed our socks off!

The accident at the petrol station (Ringwood) was not staged in my view as I know it well and the exit is dificult.

The program also slagged of the Vauxhall Astra Sport (or whatever) and showed in spades how GM get Cadbury's to make their car bodies. That thing seemed lethal to me! A car with all that power and it sufferes from one of the weakest chassis set ups ever seen!

Did we see the Astra owners club complaining? Err - No

Did we see caravan owners complaining about a spoof wind up? Err - Yes

The responce from the watching group was entirely positive. BUT! - and I think it is a big "but" - one guy said that "all the saddoes that think they have a god given right to foul up the road will complain, saying that the program was just not funny".

Reading the above (and I have just copied the lot and pasted it to all that I have email addresses for) he was exactly right!

As we all agreed he was and that those with a charisma bipass would certainly be complaining.

So lighten up you guys! - I don't like and cannot see the point of ridiculously fast cars. Clarckson does not like caravans. He no doubt would disagree with me as I do with his views on caravans

He makes more sence than most and has a superb eye for quirky detail.

As for it being less funny than Childrens BBC - How would any sensible adult know?
