I have just read we now have to but a sticker for vehicles to put on windscreen hmy:

it this right? if so where is the easiest place to gt one?

Where are you planning to go? France has some clean air zones and Germany have more. You only need to apply for a permit if you plan to go into the zones which are basically city areas.

Bit confused here. If it's a French hire car the company should supply one with a sticker. If you are towing a caravan with a uk or French car then you only need a sticker if you plan to go into a clean air zone. From the info you have given cannot see you needing one unless you go through Paris. Try Googling French Clean Air Zones. There's a lot of information about where they are and how to apply for a sticker. But you will need to know what car you might be driving with all of its V 5 details.

Those stickers are only needed for a small number of cities at the moment, though they are promising to include more in the future. For Paris it is the area inside the perifierique, but you can use that road without the sticker.

If you enter the area without the vignette you face a fine of - I think - 65€, and the French authorities now have access to the DVLA registry so can pursue you all the way home.

The same vignette is used everywhere and whether your particular rating is allow to enter the cities concerned is shown on an illuminated sign at entry points. It varies throughout the day depending upon the current pollution level.

Not quite sure what you mean. If your vehicle is registered in the UK then it is on the DVLA database that such as Plod and wheel clampers have access. Said access is now available to the French authorities - has been since this time last year - so if your registration exists so do you even if you were in a hire car as the hire company has to provide the information.

If you are in a city that requires you to have a Citi, and you dont have one. You try and get yourself away from the local Genderame. €4.50 a small price for a life of the car.

Even if you don't intend to visit the cities currently needing the sticker (and there will soon be more) for the low cost I think it may be worth having one 'just in case' eg if there is a traffic diversion from the ring road, if you need a hospital or to visit a main dealer to get a spare for the car, to meet someone arriving by train etc etc. There is just a chance that it may help to convince a gendarme you are a responsible person should you be involved in a discussion too.
