I have just purchased my first caravan and took it out last weekend (over bank Holiday). It was my first chance to see what sort of condition the Awning that came with it was in. The Awning in itself is fine no tears thankgod, but it needs a very good clean as it looks like at some point its been put away wet and has gone mouldy. I was just wondering if anybody knows if there are any companies out there that specialise in awning cleaning, as I think it is too much of a big job to try to do myself. Any help would be much appreciated, and by the way the weekend was great and I look forward to many more days away in it. - Thanks Roger

if your awning is wet,let it dry out then brush off dry mud etc with a soft brush, any heavy soiled areas can be got off with fenwicks awning cleaner.you might find some marks will not shift altogether.some cleaners you have to reproof area where cleaned, fenwicks i dont think you do.any grease marks oil etc can be cleaned with methalated spirits, but you must thoroughly rinse through with clear water(warm preferably),then reproof(fabsil is best but dearer).its always best to reproof the whole section as if you clean and reproof one spot it will look odd.if reproofing,as you spray(i use large garden spray with hand held lance type spray) rub proofer in with damp cloth(dampen with proofer)this stops streaks and patchy discoloration.as for the mould, well this is a different matter.once again methalated spirits will get the heavy black marks off,but im afraid if the canvas has been stored wet and mildew has formed you can never get rid of it as it eats into the cloth.it will eventually eat the cloth away.somepeole i know have been lucky as it has been confined to one section and the section has to be replaced, but if it is extensive then im afraid it will eventually take hold and rot the canvas, depending how bad it is you will only know best.get some advice if its bad, from awning cleaning specialists if you are unsure.

It sounds like I`ll be best of getting a new one, which brings me on to my next question - The caravan I`ve purchased is a Swift Corvette 1989/90 model. Does anyone know what size awning I should be looking at for this caravan, or can someone tell me how I go about measuring up for a new awning.

Thanks

Roger

840cms. - But check that figure by measuring from the ground at the front of the van, along the awning channel and down to the ground at the back. It's best done with a length of string.

hi roger

look at this diagram it will give you some idea
just remember when buying the awning, after measuring and say the measurement is 856 cms, size 800-850 is no good you must get the next size up and so on or youl find its a wee bit short either end
