cleaning for winter

This question has probably been asked many times but what is the best cleaner to remove the road dirt and protect my vans paintwork for the coming winter.

There are many proprietory brands of caravan shampoo on the market in caravan accessory shops and I've also seen posts by experienced caravanners who use supermarket 'own brand' shampoo and report good results.

After washing the dirt from your caravan and cleaning the bodywork with caravan shampoo rinse the caravan and dry it and apply a good car polish that does not contain a rubbing agent.

Therin you have the 'rub'-what is needed is a car wax, not a not a car polish, as most car polishes contain an abrasive to make polishing the car a one product operation. Car enthusiasts however,use a variety of products after washing the vehicle such as clay bar, paint cleaner, polish, then wax, dependent upon the state of the paintwork. This is to avoid the introduction of swirl marks from abrasives in 'polish'

An interesting alternative if its cold, wet, you haven't got much time, is to apply a product such as Demon Shine after washing. If you have a suitable device this can be sprayed on with the rinse water, and causes rain to sheet off. This is very economical to use both with the product and your time and is quite long lasting on vertical surfaces.

many vanners swear by washing the van with fenwicks/car-a-van caravan cleaners & the applying a coat off MER polish & do not buff it off, come the summer simply buff of the MER & all the winter stains come off with it. or you can use Fenwicks over wintering, which also has a lot of good reports.
