I have seen plenty of information on brushes, shampoos, polishes, etc to clean the roof of a caravan but what I can't establish is what the correct way is to get up there in the first place. I assume the awning rail is not strong enough to have a ladder leaning up against it..or is it?

I am new to this game so please, any tips???

We use a 3 way step ladder from B&Q it works as a three way split normal straight ladder or opens with two parts like a normal step ladder with the third part extending higher than a caravan. The up flight of steps has a wide adjustable base for stability.

Do not lay ladders against the rail or caravan sides unless you are very very careful.

If you have no option but to rest a ladder against the awning rail, use pipe lagging to cushion the ladder.

Get the biggest size,22 or 28mm, grey tube style (B&Q) and split down the pre cut mark, and wrap arond the ladder side rails.

HI Trev.

I have just purchased from Rockfield DIY in Hereford a super folding ladder. Fully extended it is 4 Mtrs long, but it folds into 4 sections and then is only approx 1Mtr long. It folds out to form a 1 Mtr high by 1.8Mtr long platform with easy to use steps at each end for access. Also supplied is a two piece pressed steel tread plate to fit on the ladder rungs. It is also a Class 2 rated ladder capable of carrying upto 150Kgs.

With it extended as a platform, I was easily able to wash our twenty foot van roof and all.

It may be worth checking whether with the dealer or manufacturer whether the roof is strong enough to bear your own weight and gets to grips with cleaning on all fours. When we took delivery of our caravan the dealer said the roof was designed to take a load of 100kg. After initial misgivings I tried it, first with a board to spread the load but later found out that even that wasn't necessary and now I feel quite happy walking around on top - even thought about taking deckchairs up there and using the roof as a terrace to get a better view of the surroundings.

I bought one of those Steve and they are excellent, infact it was used to clean my caravan roof yesterday. Not by me though, I sent my son-in-law to do it.hehheh! What an excellent ladder it is with its varios positions.

Look here but unfortunately it doesn't illustrate the various positions but believe me it's ideal for cleaning the roof without leaning it against the caravan and like Steve said theres a platform to stand on.

Go to that link and it shows a brochure - if you put your cursor on the edge of the page you can turn the different pages (clever idea). Turn the pages until you see the ladder then it shows you the various positions you can use it in. :O)

Like steve, I have no connections with Rockfield, but as the store is only half a mile from me I use it quite a lot and in preference to the bigger DIYs we have, like B&Q, Homebase and Focus Do It All.
