cleaning the pipes out !!!

Hi All

Going to devon in a week,van coming home tomorrow to get ready, want to clean the pipes out.

What do you use....milton etc.....

Do I just fill the aquaroll,flush through and let sit for a while?

What about the hot water tank,will it be ok in this!!!

If you plan to drink (or cook) with any of the water in your aquaroll - then the container, the piping and taps need to be flushed with a solution of Milton.

This assumes that you left the taps open, so they drained down and dried out - likewise the aquaroll.

But if you left water in the system during storage, that will all be tainted, and you will need to flush a solution of Milton through the system more than once.

Then flush with clean water a few times - part fill the aquaroll, swirl and empty, then part fill and flush the piping.

For the hot water system, I'd be tempted to follow the manufacturers advice on de-scaling the boiler (heater).

I'd probably not use Milton on the hot water system - it is just bleach and may have a detrimental effect.

I dont drink the water ,(only because I am paranoid about bugs in the aquaroll) we have got quite used to filling a jerry can for the drinking and cooking .I KNOW I KNOW I can hear you all shouting now!! I do use it to wash pots and shower in !!!

Thanks for the tips, yes it will need a few flushes I think ,its been in storage on a farm with the drain and taps open !

Tho new to caravaning we tend to wash the pipes through when we set up by putting the outside pump into a bucket of milton/water mix. Leave for a few minutes. rinse through by topping the bucket up a few times, and then transfering the pump into our normal water storage container.... thats washed out at home before setting off on a trip

Know I have said all this before on the forum but I cannot stress enough how good the new Kemdirect products are.

If you use Milton or similar product you will have the after taste and it is not a descaler and so you will not get rid of all the bacteria and germs that might be lurking in the pipes.

Using Kemdirect Descaler and Pipe Cleaner will do both jobs and also does not leave a taste. It can also be used throught the heating system.

Go to www.kemdirect.nl which is Han`s site and read about the products, all three are excellent(Kemdirect granular toilet additive and the new shampoo) and that`s not just because we provide them here in UK. Hans used to work for Thetford as one of their biochemists and he left because they did not want to move forward with their products so he did it on his own.

You can use Kemdirect descaler and cleaner in all your water pipes drinking and grey and also in the home as a pure descaler in your kettle dish washer etc etc.

You can then feel confident to drink the water in your caravan.

Hi Tina,

We also don't drink the water from our internal plastic water tank - we have an Eriba Triton (3-berth) and only use this water for washing veg, etc.

We use a washed out 2 or 4 litre milk container for "drinking" water (making tea or cooking veg) and then recycle it at the end of the trip away. Plastic milk containers don't taint the water and no cleaning worries.

Generally haven't found problems with after taste from Milton or other cleaning solutions, but have found lots of camp-sites where the water is not as neutral tasting as I would like. Usually drink Tesco value sparkling water.

Why not use bottled water for drinking, and the caravan water for showers and washing.

We NEVER drink site water. Most of it is generally (probably) OK, but would you want to ruin a holiday or break for the sake of a few quid?

We follow the same rules as Kieth, bottled mineral walter for drinking, even the kettle and cleaning of teeth, like kieth says, its only cheap, i buy a large bottle from tesco before every trip for about 60p. is it worth having an upset tummy?

Bottled water vs. tap water

We drink Tesco "value carbonated water" - the 18p for 2 litre stuff - because we like cold fizzy water.

Otherwise we use site tap water for tea / coffee / cooking and unless the site water has an unpalatable taste we would prefer not to use "still bottled water"

Why? Because still bottled water can have higher levels of microbes than tap water - after all it's just water (can be tap water) sealed in a bottle and then left in the warm and light for days, weeks or months before sale. Check the "best before" date and avoid old dusty packs.

Microbes do not survive in fizzy water because the carbon dioxide makes the water acid.
