Cleaning the water and waste pipes

Hi all,
Does anyone have a good suggestion as the best way to clean through the water and waste pipes and the best way to sterilise them we have just been away for the first time this year and the kitchen sink had a strange smell to it so we boiled the kettle and put hot water through which killed off the smell but i would like to give them a thourgh clean through before our next outing.
Thanks

Some folks use Milton to good effect but don't leave it hanging around in the system for too long as it will pit metal. I use Puriclean which is designed for caravans and motorhomes. I have also used washing soda as this is cheap and gets rid of grease. NB WASHING soda, not, I repeat, not, Caustic soda (very nasty).

I use puriclean for the fresh water system. The waste water from the kitchen went out via a corrugated flexible hose - this was where the smell ccollected. I replaced it with a smooth bore variety and the problem went. I still clean it by sealing the outlet and filling the waste pipe with domestos and water.
