happens on our Galaxy as well few days its gone we try to use the mover wherever possible even if people think i cant reverse. My clutch pedal can go as well due to the slave cylinder being mounted inside the bell housing allowing the heat to vaporise the fluid(i think)

Hiya Michael,

We had the same thing in our 06 Vectra at Hillhead a couple of years ago - smoke was bellowing out of the wheelarch after an uphill reverse.

The chap opposite came out of his van and said hey mate- smoke is coming out of your wheel arch!!!

As it happens it was a company car and I didn't give a monkeys. The car towed ok on the way home but the clutch was never the same again when towing. Hillstarts were always a worry after that and on one occasion at some lights on a hill, I accellorated, let out the clutch and the car didn't move. The van was quite within the Vectra limits.

Anyway, the smell does go but it took a couple of weeks on my motor.

Bear with it mate!

Michael,

This used to happen a lot to me when I towed with a santa fe with a manual box.

Since I've switched to an auto box ( sorento) no problems, no smell, no hassle.

On the manual/auto debate there is absolutely no contest in my book. Auto every time.

Agree with John.

Auto box is best in every respect.

Ok, so you use a bit more juice but its happy days when solo or towing.

Its a nightmare if i'm now forced into using the wife's manual car with all that left foot pedal and stick thingy!

I'm concerted and won't be rushing back to manual thats for sure.

I meant converted - not concerted - the c is next to the v on the keyboard and I have small chubby fingers (LOL)

We also have this problem when reversing uphill.

I believe it may happen because the caravan's overrun brakes are still on when you reverse and that you should chock the wheels and drop the car forward slightly to release the brakes before you reverse.

It seems a bit of a rigmarole though and I haven't tried it.

Does anyone else know if this is true?
