Computer problem. Help!

Hi All

Can anyone shed any light on a computer problem I have?

We have an oldish desk-top that we use for gaming. It has developed a fault in that when it is turned on after running through the start up screens I get the 'wallpaper' on the screen but nothing else ie no icons or tool bar. The computer is only a spare and six years old so not worth taking to a repair shop. Just wondered if any of you computer wizards out there could help. By the way not to technical please I am hopeless with these things.
 
While the computer is starting keep pressing the F8 key.

You should get several options you could try starting windows normally from there, if not start in safe mode and you should be able to run the windows help screens from there.
