Confused about which car to buy

Hi, we are aiming to return to towing a van next year after a very long break, and I am planning for a brand new company car, but I am confused.

I would like a new Skoda 2.0D and this won the 2013 awards for up to 1424KG. The review says the kerb weight as 1330KG, which is quite a bit lower than Skoda's figure, and the 85% limit is about 1130KG, which sounds limiting to me. In the same tests they chose a Passat for the 1425 to whatever range, but when I look at that model, it shows the 85% as being less than 1425KG! Am I missing something simple here?

The pictures show similar vans being towed.

If anyone can shed some light on it I would be grateful.

No idea of your question but 85% is not a limit, just a guide figure that was plucked from the air years (decades?) ago.
I understand that it's never been proven or disproven if this is a correct ratio.

Really you need to refeer to the V5c to get the mass in service figure, which can be used as kerbweight.

The 85% ratio is only for beginers, towing upto 100% is acceptable for experienced towers.

You could look for a 2011/12 Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0Tdi 4x4, mass in service/kerbweight 1,495kg, tow limit 1,600kg.
