Hi

Has anyone moved the control panels to a better position in a van? I have a Sterling Emerald 2004 and the control panel for the heating and the main fuse box are both at floor level, being 6.3 and not as agile as I was and with two replacement knees I find it a bit of a pain to lie down to see these controls,I wondered if it is possible to move them to a more convenient place,ie: at eye level.

It is very unlikely to be able to move either of those as the cabling wil not be long enough to reach a new position.

This is a bug bear of mine too. I love my van but I really don't know why all of the electric controls, i.e water heater; heater; lights; fuse board etc are not all in the same convenient place!

If it makes you feel any better, Bailey have a habit of putting their fuse box at floor level too, it's not just Sterling.

Lunar does exactly the same thing with their warm air heater controls and the gas water heater control. Why on earth do they do this?

The Truma heater control contains the thermostat. If fitted above floor level, this would tun off the heat before the bottom half of the van was warm (since waarm air rises). I understand you can buy an extension thermostat element, which can be mounted at floor level, thus allowing the control to be at a more reasonable height but have no direct experience.

Several vans I have seen have a warm air outlet right next to the control, again causing early swith-off. You have to wondeer how much some van designers understand about the components they use, and about how many of their customers feel abount getting on bended knees just to get soem heat.

Our thermostat is just at end end of our bed!!!! The other controls are nicely situated just below waist height in the inside of the wardrobe - so everything is easy to access.

We have a 2002 Sterling Eccles Onyx. The controls for the Ultraheat and Ultrastore are on the side of the wardrobe just inside the door. The PSU, fuses and mains switches for U/Heat and U/Store are in the wardrobe. Very accessible.

We have fitted a remote thermostat (thanks Gary), attached to the gas thermocouple - this has transformed the heating, keeping a constant temperature in the 'van.
