No wonder my local council need such a large stockpile of road salt. On my way to work at 5.30 this morning I spied a gritter spreading salt closely followed by a road sweeper presumably sweeping it all up!

No, the sweeper will dump it back at the grit depot, then the council save money but can honestly say, "We always treat the roads when icy, our gritters were out all night long"

our council uses the same system, it is not that the sweeper scoops up the grit but collects the surplus and spreads the rest more evenly it saves waste and does a better job with less grit, however as the gritman drives round at 40 and the sweeper 20 guess who has the longest shift.

On some roads our council sprays brine which is more precise than rock salt but a real sod for the road sweeper.

on my road the council has left a bin full of salt grit for us to spread ourselves on a s.u.o.s. (supply your own shovel) basis.

We have a council grit bin between our two drives, however we are the only ones who grit the road. Our selfish neighbours use the grit for their own driveways and leave the road clearance to others.
