couriers in france

Hi everybody

so there's no confusion I will posting this topic in chit-chat and overseas aswell.

It is and isn't linked to caravanning but edging my bets for all who view.

My daughter has secured a place as courier with keycamp next season.

My question - money. Obviously she doesn't want to pay the 2.75% on purchases and the 1.5% getting cash out all the time. Does anyone have ideas around this other than a French bank?

Thanks

Smiley,

The Caravan Club credit card advertise that they are commision free on Euro transactions but of course that would not apply to cash. My brother in law - who spends lots of time in Spain - uses a Nationwide debit card, it is commision free and am almost certain that applies to cash withdrawls although there may be a machine charge. Your daughter would have to open an account, obviously, and they, Nationwide, would be able to qualify the situation over the phone.

Hope this helps - banks are rich enough already!!

Apologies to David W . See my posting in "General" to this question. Seems we are of the same opinion re. the Caravan Club card .

How about a french account. I believe HSBC have a tie in with a french bank so money can be deposited in the UK. There is another company which may be credit agricol which can be acessed from the UK. Get yourself as a card holder and you will be one of few Englishmen able to buy petrol in France on a Sunday!

Having had a little more thought about this one there are a couple of points that are relevant.

If the young lady in question is only working a half season eg, April to June or July to August then the shortness of the stay does not make the costs involved in using her own UK card really significant. She would only use the card once or twice a month so the total costs are not so high.

If she plans on doing a whole season,ie, April to October then applying for an account with a local bank could be advantageous. As a non-resident she can probably open an account (non interest bearing) that will give her a ATM card and probably free withdrawals if she uses the same bank machines. She may have to deposit a large'ish sum (2-3000 euros) to get the account but she can always close it at the end of the time and withdraw her money. She will have to be careful that she does not exceed 180 days in France at any time or she will be subject automatically to the French tax system, and it is ferocious and does not give any consideration to UK taxes.

Smiley,

Looks like you've raised an interesting thread - just looked at the Nationwide Website and they do operate a no commision no cashpoint charge on European use - sounds so magic I may even open an account meself! Good interest on current accounts too.(usual disclaimer by the way)

It really does sound too good to be true for a regular Euro hopper or long stay vanner so thought it worth coming on the thread again - check it out for yourselves people it's a hot tip!

I've been using a nationwide debit card to get cash from ATM's for several years. Nationewide do not charge commision fees on its debit cards or credit cards and teh exchange rate is teh commercial rate which is beter than teh toursit rate. Account can be managed on line as well once registered.
