Creating avatar

I'm sure that sometime and somewhere on this site I've seen instructions on how to create an avatar to display along with your posts but for the life of me I cannot find it. Can anyone either post a link to whatever thread it is in or describe how to do it.
I have found Parksy's guide to posting photographs which is now almost lost on either page 6 or 7 and tried to fathom it out from that but to no avail.
Could I suggest making the instructions for creating avatars and posting photos into a "sticky"

Thanks earlyriser. I knew I had seen details posted but was convinced it was under "our website", never thought of looking under general. I'll go try figure it out now.
