credit card use charge whilst abroad

How many people like myself have opted out of the Caravan Club card (Frizzell)now they are charging commission?

I have opted for the Post Office card (Bank of Ireland)

At one time I had the Camping and Caravanning Club card but they also trimmed the benefits.

Greetings Hymerman,

Thank you for that.

I've been meaning to ditch the Frizzel card for ages. I've just applied on line for a Nationwide Card.(No charges abroad)!!!

I agree with the points made, and have never been impressed with Frizzell at any time.

However, why the desperate necessity to use a credit card at all when abroad? One can withdraw cash just as easily using a debit card and both will use exchange rates that are never going to be the best. To my mind using a credit card in any non-banking establishment is leaving you open to the possibility of fraud, which at the very least will take time to sort out. Yes, I agree you can get 'hijacked' if the ATM has been tampered with, but it is rare.

If there is some bonus one can obtain from using the card, then possibly there is an advantage, but unless you go for short trips so it can be paid off, there is always the potential of interest charges, which can soon add up. Credit cards are there to make money for the suppliers, namely the banks, or they would not offer them. I carry one yes, but only for emergency use.

I still believe the old adage 'cash is king'.

Your debit card will give you a better exchange rate than any bureau de change either here or on the continent.

Have our cards set up for auto repayment each month so no problem with not paying the balance.

CREDIT cards are very useful for such things as car parks, so many now in France and Spain are fully automated, and of course the Toll charges on motorways where you can go through much much quicker than if paying cash...July - August will see ques lasting upto 15 minutes on some of the most popular routes in southern France and going into Spain.
