We have booked Crystal Palace, going on a Friday evening from Bristol. Google route planner says M4 then keep going straight into London.

Don't fancy that on a Friday evening and would possibly hit Congestion Charge. Would anyone know if M25 then North on M23 / A23 to Crystal Palace is a good route.

thats is the better route but its not that simple get a good a to z.

We went along the M4 off at j2 past Kew, Wandsworth,(wrong turn through Tooting)Clapham, Balham, Stretham and finally Crystal Palace. No problem. However it was during half term and at midday on a Wednesday. I can imagine a Friday night will be more stressful!

From recollection I think the congestion charge finishes at 18:00 on a Friday night.

The no 3 bus takes you all the way to central London but we found it quicker to get off at Brixton and onto the Tube. The Travel Cards are good value as well.

I work at the London congestion charge end of the M4/A4, livw in Hampshire and have driven up to London all my working life plus I know the south side of London very well. First of all what time do you intend hitting London in the evening because on a Friday night the traffic starts building up about 3.00pm and then goes on until at least 8.00pm or later. Also what size of van are you towing ?

My advice is similar to Mathew's but I would come off the M4 onto the M25 and follow this around anti-clockwise to Junction 10 (A3 turning) come off here and head towards London. You travel about 10 miles on this dual carriageway then exit on a slip road onto the A298 and head for Merton/Wimbledon (there will be a large B&Q store on your left as you go over a flyover). Head on this road to Tooting Bec and then head towards Streatham Common (A214 the A23)around St Leonards Church one way system then for a short period before you turn left at the common(A214 again) and all the way up to Crystal Palace.

If the traffic runs well you will be motorway or dual carriageway right up to the last eight miles or so. The last bit of the journey will be on main roads that have quite a bit of heavey traffic but that is London for you. Listen out on the radio for updates on the M25 because sometimes it runs well and other times it gets a bit sticky - usually on the clockwise on a Friday !
