Hi, I've have read various posts re towball mounted cycle carriers and fully understand the problems with noseweights. I am looking at either a roof mounted system or the cheaper option as I already have one is a rack which attaches to the rear of the car, I have a Vectra so it rest on the rear window and boot lid. It does hold the bikes high to avoid covering the rear lights, my question is does this effect the nose weight or is it only if it is on the van it's self or attached to the towbar? any help would be gratefull, thanks.

If the cycle carrier is in no way connected to the towbar then it won't affect the noseweight.

It's not 100% clear to me what design of cycle carrier you have in mind that rests on the rear window and the boot lid but I'd be a bit wary about supporting any substantial weight like a loaded cycle carrier on the boot lid for fear of denting it. You don't say whether you are talking about the hatchback or notchback version of the Vectra but the notchback bootlid is made from relatively thin gauge sheet metal because it was never designed to take any extra loads. The hatchback may be a bit more favorable in this respect as its tailgate has to provide more structural integrity because of the larger body opening.
