We will be going to Spain in February for a couple of months. We do not take a tv and miss the news. We try and get World Service but not always successful. If we bought a DAB radio would we have more success and would it be of any use abroad. If we bought a DAB radio with wifi or internet would we be better off.

Hi Frank,

The Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system is virtually unique to the UK, and as such it is not available abroad.

Wifi/internet may work, but that will depend on your destination having internet connectivity available. All BBC domestic channels are available via the internet

If you want just BBC World Service you might consider a conventional SW radio, though in some parts or Europe the old LW 198 m wave length can be picked up on AM radios.

DAB is available here in Germany although coverage is not universal and reception does not include any non-German channels. DAB never really caught on so the selection is rather limited. The French never adopted DAB but have their own DMB system. Spain has DAB, but doesn't offer any English-speaking channels, either.

Hello Lutz,

Thanks for the update,

I was not aware of other countries using the DAB system, I seem to recall that the cost of the receivers was high mainly because it was a very restricted market based on the UK.

Following your posting i have now discovered that DAB ( not DAB+ or DMB) is available in a number of western European countries, but the coverage is sketchy, and of course it is in the local language.

There are other systems which are not compatible (DAB+ and DMB)

regardless Franks problem is not resolved, and he will stil be beter off with internet or AM (LW & SW) receivers.
