Hi all,

last weekend we managed to get away for our third spell in the caravan since buying it last october.

what i have come across is that each time we return i then find something that has broken, sheared, split or other damage inflicted.

this last trip brought us over some hill roads leading up from new galloway, parts of the road were well tarmacced but plenty of other parts were in an awful state, probably due to the severe winter we have had.

as we travelled back home i said to the missus that the pot holes and rough rippled parts of the road would surely be doing some damage to the caravan, you could even hear the clunks and bumps when going over these parts, and that was at a moderate speed.

sure enough, on getting home i got it parked up and went to begin the emptying of cargo duty, when i went inside there was a metal strip lying on the floor. it turned out to be the wee door at the bottom of the cooker where the frying pan and stuff can be stored. on inspection, i noticed there was a metal pin sheared off the right hand side, this is used to secure the door to the cooker. no problems there, went to the garage and sourced a self tapper which was slightly over sized, put the end that was undamaged back into the keeper then lowered the door and inserted the self tapper, job done, and it will probably be stronger than the original fitting.

as i said, we have only been away three times, but each time there has been a slight repair job to do, luckily i could do this myself, i am quite sure there are lots of you who could also carry out small maintenance jobs like this rather than going back to dealers and workshops.

i look upon it as a sort of improvisation on my caravan, as im sure with the state of our roads there will be more to come.

if you have any wee mishaps, have a think about them and see if they could be fixed by yourself first, i have done it, so you could as well.

I couldn't agree more MacH,I think that there is a good deal of "panic stations" when something comes adrift when in fact a simple repair is quite possible to most owners. After all,it's not rocket science!

On our Abbey I kept all the bits and bobs in a drawer that fell off that I couldn't find out where they came from. Some I was successful at locating, like the heater cowling, a cupboard door or light covers ... heh! heh! ... but it was the screws that used to defeat me.

Lord B,

We never realised you had done a stint inside! What was it, tax evasion or mistreatment of servants?

Very good David, a funny start to the day!

A bit like Maggie's old Cabinet, one loose screw and it all fell apart.

Cheers

The bits falling off will continue for a while Mac H until the time when you go on a trip and when you put the caravan away on your return nothing will have fallen off, split, sheared or become broken in any way.

This happy day usually happens around the same time as your other half sees another caravan that she likes the look of and you have to buy it.

Then the entire process starts again.

Debauchery with the milk maid :O)

Oh, and the stable lass and chamber maid.

And claiming mortgage on my second home, Sodham Hall, when I'd inherited it :O(
