On holiday last week. we had an unfortunate accident. Our aqua roll bar managed to drop through the vent holes in the front box vertically creating a large hole under the caravan as we reversed onto our pitch. The caravan repairers say they have never heard of this happening before am I just unlucky. What can anyone suggest that I should do to prevent this happening again. My friends fill their front box thus preventing movement of small narrow objects but my towcar will not allow me to fill my front box. Any help please.

Sorry to hear about this Jason ,you dont say what type of caravan you have but please read 'warning to swift owners' on this forum. The same thing happened to us- and many more . I see that lidl are selling a mesh to cover gutters that would be ideal to staple or nail to the underside of the locker floor try-http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20070903.p.Gutter_Protection.ar11 Otherwise try a bit of chicken wire as has always been fitted to all our previous vans. this allows any gas from a leak to safely drop through the holes but does not allow any items stored oin the locker to fall through.hope this helps.

If you refer to the 28 August posting "Warning to Swift Owners" and my response to this. I think this is a really serious situation with possible fatal consequences, particularly to following motorcyclists. I have e-mailed Swift and referred them to these postings and hopefully they will do something about it. The very least they should do is send a warning to all current owners and remedy the situation on new builds.

Hi..

It strikes me that it's a real shame that none of us know anyone who prints a caravanning magazine, otherwise they might now consider this a worthy issue to feature.

I appreciate that Theresa has tried to get their attention but clearly a lone voice does not carry enough weight here. Maybe a collective voice could do the trick.

The only problem now is to try and find someone who prints this type of publiction. Any clues anyone....

Regards Bian.....

Hi all, just to let you know I have mailed the practical caravan editor personally with photos included to explain the problems and the resultant damage. Mail has been read but no reply as yet. I also contacted the camping and caravanning club when it happened but they did not seem interested enough to print a warning in the magazine.Today I re-contacted c+cc and was asked to mail more details to them.Swift ,at the time promised a rethink of the design but as has been shown through this site there are still unprotected gas drop holes in the front locker. As stated previously ,they are easily overlooked where situated unlike that of the new Elddis vans which have a large hole between the gas bottles which is instantly seen on opening the locker.Hopefully we can get something done at last.......
