In another thread i said about a sidewall blowout on our Chineses tyres (Travelmax) suplied by our caravan dealer, they had done about 6000 miles. The insures will not pay for the tyre but would pay for the new alloy wheel, as Coachman no longer supply that design i would have to have the new type , making odd wheels on unit.Today i had the old tyre taken off and was amazed at the damage to the wheel, apart from the whole rim being carved off it has gone out of shape. Never the less i took it to a engineers place not one of those alloy wheel refurbershers. He said he can bring it back to shape and weld on the rim again, he rekons about £70 for the job, against the £209 for new wheel. Next is Tyres was any conclusions made about the Matordor tyre debate?.I am having Pirelle fitted at £ 60 for the 195/70 R14 95N.

If you can afford it go for the new wheel option.

You can't see both sides of the van at the same time and yes, it will be cosmetically different to the one on the other side, but unless you are selling up, it's not likely to be noticed and only you will know that the wheels are not identical.

Unless some saddo comes on later to say that they actually go round sites of an evening checking to see if caravans have mismatched wheels, you should not have a problem so long as the dimensions and ratings are identical.

Personally, I would not go anywhere near an alloy that has had it's rim welded back on.

As strong as the weld may be, there could be a weakness in the 'heat affected zone' around the weld that can never be guaranteed to be as strong as the original wheel rim.

That could result in you, your family, your unit and those around you being at a greater risk of the results of another blowout, should the welded rim fail prematurely.

Have you looked at the option of a caravan dismantler, who may be able to provide you with 2 suitable wheels.
