I have just done a damp check on my caravan, all was well till I started on the floor, I am getting a positive reading on the whole floor, so I lifted the carpets etc and found the floor to be bone dry on touch, with no visible sign of damp, except for a small area the rear corner, which I will cut out and repair, I am hoping that I can dry out and reseal the whole floor---anybody any ideas on what to use for resealing??--I would imagine a waterproof solution of some sort??

Hello Rob.

May I strongly suggest you stop and think very carefully before implementing a repair that may not be necessary.

Do you have detailed instructions on how to interpret the results from your 'Damp Meter'? and how do you know your meter is actually working properly?

A 'damp meter' is a device that measures the Resistance between two probes, and if it is sufficiently low it will indicate.

There are numerous instances where 'damp proofing experts' will survey a house, and claim there is a damp problem, when in fact it is some thing else that can be quite innocuous . They will often use a meter and it has been known for them to make it give false readings by misusing it, obviously to try and convince the homeowner to spend money with them.

You may have inadvertently caused it to give a false reading in your caravan. or you may have mis interpreted the reading.

For example;

Do you know what the reading should be for a wooden floor?

Have you been consistent in the amount you have pushed the test pins into the surface (the deeper the penetration into the surface the more contact area is created which will reduce the resistance between the pins showing increased moisture level)

What was the relative humidity at the times you took the readings. Had the caravan been used over night (which will raise the humidity in the caravan and cause more surface moisture to be present.

What was the temperature?

All these things will affect the reading, and may give you a false impression of the real situation.
