The main benefit of a dashcam is to provide evidence in a claim against a third party - so less chance of "knock-for-knock" and loss of NCD.

No discount for dashcam with any of the insurers we have used over the years. They do not even ask about it although it may save the insurer a fortune in the event of a claim!

Having very recently considerably shopped around for insurance quotes on various comparison sites and direct to insurers; there were 2 or 3 occasions when I was asked on the online form if I had a dash cam. I don’t but even if I did I doubt it would have been apparent in the quotes if I was being offered a discount or not.

How do you find the video quality bud?
Been watching a few videos and the footage seems great on a nice clear day, but add in any other type of day and the footage looks not so good.

I’ve got a Nextbase 522GW and its video clarity is fine on overcast days. Night time in urban streets very good.

No issue on good or bad days. I think a lot depends on the resolution settings. I cannot recall when last we used the vehicle at night so cannot comment. Ours was all installed by Nextbase and they also set it u.

Nextbase have a polarising filter which needs to be set correctly. Simple stuff though all you need is a piece of A4 white paper placed on the dash. Then turn filter to minimise reflection of paper on dash cam screen.

I had mine fitted at Halfords, who were doing a good summer offer. Prior to going I cleaned the windscreen with Autoglym glass polish then fast glass. The technician was meticulous and we discussed the best location to mount it. Of course mounting points can be contentious as I’m 6 ft 4 inches and have the seat full back there wasn’t anywhere that it was totally hidden from sight. My wife at 5ft 2 in has to crick her neck even to see the rear view mirror. In the end it was fitted to the left of the rear view mirror high up in the swept arc of the wipers. It’s passed two mot without issue. Perhaps the testers were shorties.
To my mind there’s a technical shortcoming in Next bases fitting instructions in that once the mount is bonded to the screen the dashcam is then mounted and moved to achieve the right perspective. The adhesive has little opportunity to achieve bond strength. So despite the technician using isopropyl etc it still came off after a couple of months. I thought it may have been attributable to my using an aluminium screen shield. So I reinstalled it but left the new mount pad for 24 hours before attaching the dashcam. This lasted 6 months. So now it’s on a Nextbase suction mount. Six months on it’s not given a problem. But if it does come off it’s easy peasy to clean the suction cup to restore its stickiness then just put it back.

We also fitted the stick on mount and left it for 24 hours. No difference as on first hot day, the dashcam fell off. No more issues with the suction mount.

I have had the opposite problem. Using a suction mount for many years. The camera would fall off in hot sun. I even had a safety cord from camera to the mirror. I have moved to the stick on mainly to get further behind the mirror. It has not been any problem. I just wiped the glass with meths, then let it dry. I needed to remove the rear view camera when I changed car. It did come off cleanly. But was not an easy removal.
