Dehumidifiers

Caravanstuff4u are selling twin pack wireless rechargeable dehumidifers for £18.79 inc vat. Two for the price of one.

Has anyone used these? Are they any good?

Hi Alan, We have used these for about 3 months now, they seem to work, they use the moisture absorbing cristals that the older type moisture traps use the advantage being that they are a sealed unit so no chance of any spillage, we have noticed since using them that there seems to be less condensation when we use the van now. I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you what a waste of time it is to use a dehumidifier when there are so many vents in a caravan where moist air can enter. I would rather have the moisture soaked up by these than the furnishings .

Not going to say its a waste of time using a dehumidifier one is running at the moment in the van in the garage.

However from the vast amounts of water it makes it obviously is getting much of this from Hampshire. Depending on the humidity levels this can be in excess of 5 litres a week.

So it seems self evident to me that the relatively small amount of water a few crystals could absorb is a complete waste of money/time. The atmospheric water they absorb will be replaced so quickly.

I have always used dehumidifiers and have always had a pleasant smelling van even when not using it for 6 months, and of course a totally dry van (inside). No damp upholstery, no nothing! By the way I always leave a toilet roll on a shelf in the van and if that is dry so is everything else.

Hi there

I am trying out salt in trays. It was one of the tips in the magazine it works well change the salt about every 3 months.

Great idea at very little cost.

Hi Stephen, Please do not use salt in a bowl, because it will turn all your nice crome handle and other thing in your van to rust, use the proper stuff, Happy Caravaning Trevor

I can't see the point of reducing humidity inside the caravan while I'm not using it. It seems to me to be a lot of effort (or cost) for no benefit. I just dry it out a day or two before going away by putting the heating on.

A Couple of trays of washing powder placed around the van also works to absorb moisture too and smells nicer than salt

The really cheap and nasty powder will also be fine.

You say do not use Salt.These moisture absorbing cristals trays are these ok. I have only used salt for one winter after reading about it in Top Tips.

The "crystal" type of de-humidifiers use a chemical somewhat similar to Silica Gel - and they're perfectly safe.

The reason for suggesting that Table Salt is a bad idea is that it causes corrosion. You may say that Salt is a crystal and it can't possibly evaporate, so how does it get from the tray to every nook and cranny in the caravan? Well there's a vast range of particle sizes in table salt from stuff you can see down to microscopic dust sized particles - and it's these that are wafted aloft by the faintest air currents.

And no we don't use a dehumidifier, but that's because I'm a scientist and engineer, and I know it's really not worth doing - except for switching on the heating a day or so before leaving on a winter trip...
