Directional Aerial Or Satellite

Hi,

Didn't want to hijack the Directional Aerial thread so have started afresh (hope that's ok...)

We've just got back from our 1st trip out, not usualy a huge tv fan but the weather was lousy so tried to tune in digibox but got an error saying weak or no signal.

I was trying to use a 10 year old status aerial on a site with known poor reception so no suprise there, just wondering what people in my situation would do; go for a directional aerial or sattelite dish with the sky box from home?

Many thanks,

Mick.

Mick, as usual the Status appears to be a waste of time, at least the old ones!

Alternatives, having stayed on 2 sites over the last 2 weeks, got great satellite reception on one site, but unable to get a line of sight on the second, so reverted to directional aerial, with great results.

Conclusion, there are times when both satellite or directional come into their own.

Hi Mick,

It's satellite for me every time, I have never not been able to get a signal on any site we have stayed on. If I am sited with a blocked view to satellite then I mount the dish on a tripod and move it to a position where I can pick up a signal otherwise the dish is stuck to the side/rear of the van.

Hope this helps

Mick,

When you say you tried to tune in your digibox with your status ariel what do you mean? you will never get a signal using the status ariel with your digibox.

Graham - you can use the term digibox to describe digital freeview recievers and digital cable recievers as well. I believe mick was refferring to a freeview (terrestrial) reciever.

Personally I have rarely had any problems with digital signals on appx 40 sites we have visited over the last couple of years with the Status 530.

We also use satellite sometimes, for the extra channels not normally because we can not get a signal.

Hi Mick

Sky for us - we take the Sky box from home and use an old Sky dish mounted on an old camera tripod. Used it all over UK and down to Dordogne in France. Never a problem. I do check with a compass for A CLEAR LINE OF SIGHT BEFORE siting the van. We are paying Sky each month for their programmes so why leave the Skybox and card at home.

Satellite receiver every time.

After messing about with an extra large aerial (more gain) and a freeview box, we decided to go the satellite receiver route and haven't looked back.

Even worked in Bardolino (Lake Garda) Sky news and a few others.

But at Orta San Giulio (Lake Orta), we could pick up everything that is available at home, Look Northwest, Granada, etc.

You wont be disapointed.

I know there are none tv advocates on here, but I do like to keep up with local news.

Steven.

I have both sattelite and digibox and alternate between the two. I have had both rubbish and excellent pictures on digital using status aerial. My van is 1988 with a retro fitted status so don't know how old the aerial is.
