directional arials

could any one please tell me if the directional arials you get on new vans are any good? we are looking at a new second hand van which has one. i currently use an external status aerial which hooks up in my battery box and the new van we have seen does not have a factory fitted external arial point which worries me if i cant get a good reception off the arial on the van. any help will be appreciated

The directional arials are far better than omnidirectional (you dont see any on roof tops). When didgital tv is compulsary & you have to use a freeveiw box (or sky dish) you will only receive the signal with a good directional arial.

thanx graham, i do have an omni now but dont use bcos i can never get a pic off it lol probably like so many other people?

Hi Craig

I replaced the Status omni-directional "mushroom" on my previous 'van with a Status 530 (short mast) directional aerial. The directional was a BIG improvement. My current Bailey Arizona came with the same aerial. I use it with a digibox and overseas with multi-standard TV. The 530 works very well. I imagine the long mast version that fitst in the wardrobe works even better.

We find our directional Status 530 very good and have got much better pictures than neighbours with mast mounted aerials - particularly if they do not have an amplifier as fitted our 530.

Stopped using my mast mounted directional aerial now my new van is fitted with a Status 530 directional aerial. First class especially for digital.

The old type Status were not much better than a coat hanger - have used the new Status directional elevating ariel in my Virginia three times now in varying parts of the kingdom and have no probs recieving all the Freeview channels. It seems to do what it says on the tin then.

I upgraded from omni to the directional and the results were clear to see.I don't think I ever used the omni aerial as the reception was not good.

I am not quite sure why they still fit them as standard equipment.

I use a freeview box with my old style status (nr seaton) & i recieve more channels than at home with a household digital aerial.

This is very interesting. I have used my status omni-directional ariel with my freeview box without any problems whatsoever. up until last weekend that is. whilst staying at Pembrey CC Site, the tv reception through the omni was not good. although it picked up quite a few freeview channels, the picture kept locking-up?,so,after a trip to the local B&Q and parting with

Hi Andrew,

I have a directional arial. On holiday in Torbay a couple of weeks ago I was unable to line up the arial with the transmitter because of the trees & bushes at the rear of our van.

I can only assume that at Pembury, it has a bad tv reception or that you must have been in a bad possition to receive a signal from the transmitter.

Make sure that there are no stray wires from the screen (braided outside layer) touching the centre conductor at either end.

If you have a meter, put it across the two connectors at each end and you should get a high resistance reading, if you then short out one end you should read low resistance across the other end - this would confirm cable and cable connections OK.

Another tip - if the centre conductor is not held by a small screw bend that conductor a little to make sure it has good contact with the sides of the tube in the pin of the plug.

If everything including the aerial is connected you should read around 75 Ohms across the plug for the TV.
