just bought a second hand car with alko tow hitch already fitted.what is the best thing to use to clean the ball before i tow with it.
 
Brake cleaner which comes in an aerosol spray should do the job Ken.

If rust is present give the ball a rub with emery cloth before spraying it with the brake cleaner and wiping it with a clean cloth.

yes it does but read the can instructions first some brake and carb cleaners contain "carbon tetrachloride" dont breath in the fumes or get it on your skin it's nasty stuff.

BTW I used to use white spirt or nail varnish remover (contains acetone) so same as above
