Dirty number plates

At this time of the year, there seems to be loads of cars on the road with filthy back-ends - mainly hatchbacks and estates. Can any of you experts out there tell me why the backs of this type of car (including mine!) attract so much more dirt than the rest of the car. Very convenient of course if you want to keep an unreadable rear number plate to foil speed cameras! Do people ever get warnings or prosecutions?

The spray seems to go along the car then round the back and stick Why? possible to do with the design. As for being fined for it not heard of anyone. We always keep windows and number plate clean. In fact hubby cleaned the car in and out this morn lovely and shiny for a while

The dirty rears are caused by the air flow over the vehicle. If the air stream does not leave the vehicle cleanly it causes a turbulence and an area of negative pressure behind the vehicle. This causes the filth to be deposited on the rear of the vehicle.
Car design plays a big part.A slippery shape allows the displaced air to continue over and behind the moving vehicle taking the dirt with it.A hatchback or estate tends not to have this slippery shape hence the dirty back end.
A small spoiler sometimes helps but this would be trial and error without a wind tunnel.
This was a big problem in the 70's when the hatchback became popular. Many second hand car adverts boasted a bidet as part of the cars extras! (rear wash/wipe)

I had a colleague who thought he was being clever by letting his number plate get excessively dirty to avoid speed cameras.

He was stopped by the police who gave him the option of a fixed penalty OR to clean both the number plate and the light lenses.
He chose to clean, but only had some designer bottled water and his handkerchief to do it with.
We enjoyed the moment, and well done to the copper who made the punishment fit the crime and it certainly took the smarmy look on my colleagues face.

Most if not all Speed cameras can read a very dirty number plates with high def and then using computer analysis so you might as well keep them clean.
Plenty of silcon on the plate helps shed water and dirt. Before windscreen washers my dad cleaned his windows every time he stopped for fuel or a break on a long drive. A bit of sponge keeps number plates clean enough with a quick swipe.

As has been said its down to air flow
The Kuga is much cleaner at the rear with its rounded shape but that comes at the cost of reduced boot space
My neighbour has similar rear on his Civic and that has no rear wash wipe as a consequence

Hi,
I can remember the days when a forcourt attendant filled your petrol tank and then wiped your windscreen. And I particularly remember the day it was raining, and the nubile attendant filled my tank - wearing a bikini. Probably sometime in 1958.

If you ever get a ticket for a dirty number plate always check the number plate on the police car as it may be just as dirty. We have an estate and put the rear dirty end down to the vacuum formed behind the car when travelling. For the same reason you never travel with the tailgate window open as all the fumes from the exhaust will be sucked into the car.
