I have just deleted an account and some messages as the user decided to start stating that a certain site had the best views and was the best site they had stayed at.

Please do not mislead the users of the forum. This forum IS NOT for free advertising of your own SITE.

to mod3 & all other moderators.

you have to do what you think is right to conserve the dignity and purpose of this forum thats your right and your job (I would not like to do it) however I must point out that the member in question was well liked and a respected contributor of this forum and will be sadly missed, if site owners and wardens are not have a voice on this forum we miss their view point from the other side of the fence so to speak and will be all the more less well informed.

regards colin.

I totally agree colin - it's sad really and getting silly :O(

What wording was used I don't know because I never saw it but regarding the advertising I've seen many others doing the same, either advertising their sites, in this country or France, books written, awning manufacturers, DVDs on cl's or even other caravan related websites.

If it wasn't for others, for example, mentioning the book with sea views, I doubt if I would ever have heard of it so I'm pleased when someone comes out with these snippets of information.

I missed that. Who got the chop? Steve-, the way I read your post, it was not the owner who advertised, but a caravanner who had stayed on the site. Can you clarify which it was please?

The user in question was posting things such as

I just got back from "site A" and had the best time ever

and

The best views I have ever seen, recommend this site

When their address is listed as the site. Advertising is not allowed on the forum, and misleading users by pretending that they visited the site is wrong.

Also Colin, the user in question was a recent joiner, so, you define respected to mean someone who just joined and started misleading users.

The Ban stays!

Did they have two accounts - if so they deserve what they got for deceit.

If the user in question had been asked about the site or had not acting like a visitor who just got back from the site then I would not have a problem. However, this user posted as if they had come back from a trip to this site and was singing its praises. Not a banable offense in any way. Unless you list your address as the same site!

Do not forget I am also a user of this forum (somthing I may end very soon) and do not like being mislead.

Afterall, how good can the site be if the owner has to pretend to be a user in order to get people to go?

There are many other site owners on this forum who post about their sites. All of which are allowed to post replies and info about their site when asked. But none have tried to mislead the users into thinking that their post is a great review from another user.

As the user was a new user and posted 3 posts so far, I have to conclude that Colins post is either misunderstood or a direct attack against me. either way, its nice to be liked!

hi steve

after reading the replies in this tread and your answer to my post I concur that I must have the wrong end of the stick and appologise for this missunderstanding.

I assumed (obviously wrongly) that the member in question was a long standing contributor who happens to be a warden of a site in cornwall. and is well liked and respected on this forum. I had read somewhere that she had been banned and has not been on the forum for some time I thought your post was about her.

in he circumstances you describe you were right to take the action you did.

The user you think had her account re-enabled again by me several days ago and is around somewhere. I have spoken to her and she understands why her account was suspended and has no disagreement with what happened.

I should have worded my original post better. But I have to avoid posting names of banned members.

As a caravanner, I welcome the site owners on this forum, but as a moderator, I have to try to balance and decide the difference between information and advertising.

Just so everyone knows how I personally make the choice. If someone offers information about their site in reply to a request such as "I am going to scotland, can anyone suggest a good site?" then I am happy for the owner to pipe up and say "our site offers....etc" BUT, I cannot allow advertising without a request as this is against the rules.

Also note that some time ago a pair of users appeared who asked questions about a product and then answered it. This was removed because the 2 members where connected with the product.

Also, we have had in the past, one manufacturer bring up an obsure fact about another manufacturer to show them in a bad light. Much to the posters annouyance, we investigated the claim and published the facts. This forum is a powerful place for adverts or mis-information because it is popular. Thats why the mods exist, to protect the users.

In those circumstances, I can only concur with your decision, Steve-. But, may I ask, why are you contemplating leaving the site?
emmerson

I am considering not posting as a user because my interests are caravanning and not politics, social differings or personal gains.

I read almost everything on the forum and can honestly say less than 50% of its contents relate in no way to my interests.

Unless I'm missing something Steve how did they do that. Did they have two accounts as I asked above, posting as the site owner in one account and posting as a visitor in another?

If so they must be pretty desperate for visitors :O(

no, one account

They posted that they had just returned from a site and that it was fantastic and great views etc etc. This was a single post on uk parks and was not an answer to another thread.

Then they also posted a reply to another thread stating that they love this site (not mentioned before in the thread) and that the user should go there.

Both of these posting caused not flags to be raised until I did my normal daily look at the admin screen. This showed the site name in the users mail address. A look at thier account showed the site mentioned as their address and I have to conclude that they are misleading people into visiting their site by saying they had been there as a visitor.

As I have said. I don't mind site owners giving information and welcome it. But to posts as if you are a visitor and post a great review when you own the site is very misleading and unfair.

I seem to remember several of our number were upset when a well known club placed adverts on this site. Without the aid of the Mods we would soon be overun by everyone who had a product to peddle. Whilst we may sometmes not always appreciate the Mods actions I for one would never condemn them for carrying out the rules because I do not believe that they ever act in malice but only for the benifit of all.

To Mods 1, 2 & 3 - I have myself on times overstepped the mark and had my knuckles rapped - however I admire and respect their duties and will agree with their action although on times it might be hurtful to the individual concerned. I would not like to do their work of policing a forum and can understand the reasoning behind this latest incident. However on saying that Steve I am of the opinion that your postings as a contributer to the forum will be missed and that you should continue wearing the contributer hat whilst still wearing your mod. hat.

Mod 3 is the only one who has identifyed themselves on this forum. In hindsight it might have been better if all mods were not identified. I have nothing to hide myself but it does appear that by knowing their identity they are taking more criticism than being not known. Sorry Steve this is not aimed at you but a general opinion of mods. Keep up the good work whether you are known or otherwise.
