Just to let the forum know that if you are looking for a satellite dish tripod and have been surprised at the price of these hings ... 1.Maplins sell very robust speaker tripod stands for c.£19 , which extend for 4 foot above the base...or being the tightwad that I am I went to cash converters and got one for a fiver. Does the job and dosn't fall over at the slightest breeze.

i have been meaning to enquire about this !! what is the best ! tripod or a piece of 2" pipe in the jockey wheel hole ?
i'm sure the 2" pipe will be the solidest where as the tripod runs the chance of being blew over/trip over etc but what is the draw back of using the jockey wheel hole ? is it to do with position of sorindings (trees/caravans/etc) as dave has said ? so what do yous advise ? thanks

The jockey wheel mounting would often have problems due to the caravan or sometimes trees being in the way of the signal. You need a fairly clear view of the sky to the SE. Mounting it on a pole long enough to clear the roof of the van would be too wobbly, and you could not do the adjustments. Or you would have to place you van always facing somewhere between east to SW, not always practical. A tripod allows you to move it to any position clear of trees, buildings etc.

I aquired a speaker tripod (SKYPE) and never looked back. As already said line of sight is critical, 147deg (for Sky) and you will not be far away but what I have found is how important the pole being virtical is; an extra few mins getting it vertical saves 30 in the long run. I have a 65cm dish bought from maplins and errect it onsite. I also have a peeping thing to get the signal A1. that is 75% and above for strength and 50% and above for quality and I get all the channels I do at home. Last weekend because we where surounded by trees the dish was 10' away from the van. I do put guide ropes on for extra measure.
