Hello,

Being new to caravaning and having to buy a new alloy for my caravan. Do the tyres need to be balanced? My caravan is a Twin Axle. Thank you.

Hi,

Well it won't hurt, and may well reduce vibration and suspension wear - and protect the inside fixtures and fittings.

Niki,

Over many years one of the first things i do with a new caravan is have the wheels balanced.

I assume that as a result i have never had a problem with fixtures and fittings working loose.

As rob jax says it cannot do any harm only good.

A couple of manufacturers, cannot remember which, now balance wheels on new caravans.

I assume a smooth running caravan with as few vibrations as possible will help stop panel joint movement and therefore dreaded leaks.

Hi

I have a Compass Rallye from the Explorer group and they feature balanced wheels as an aid to smoother running,

I would think that wheel bearing fatigue would be reduced with balanced wheel/tyre combinations. Plus wear spots on the tyres too; haven't you ever seen the blocky tread wear of an unbalanced tyre?

Quite marked on a tyre that's done a good few miles, it's surprising.

I would not drive my car with unbalanced wheels,so just because you can't feel the vibation from the van does'nt mean they are OK.I would also make sure they are balanced as well

Hi.

I have just replied to another thread about fitting dampers. I can confirm that excessive vibrations can and will cause premature failures of equipment, so not only should wheels be balanced, consider fitting dampers as well.

Niki

No tyre fitter who knows his trade should fit a tyre without ballancing the wheel and tyre afterwards, whatever the vehicle.

I would not accept a new caravan if the wheels were not ballanced either.

Ok,My alloy centre is a much large diameter hole than the hub I have been told that this should have spiggot spacers and there is no point balancing the wheels without these? Do you have spiggot spacers on your caravans alloys? My caravan is an Elddis Crusader Storm 2006 and they are the standard alloys from new? Thanks Niki

Hi all

A lot of people now seem to think that balancing caravan tyres should be done because it leads to lease vibration being passed through the caravan. With all these postings on the forum about ABS panels cracking/spliting I am thinking I must get mine done.

Anyone who has driven a car with an unballanced front wheel will have felt the severe vibration on the steering wheel will not want their caravan to suffer.

The old saying that a unballanced trailer wheel cannot be felt so does not need to be ballanced is (or should be) well outdated.
