Do I look like a "mug"

As you are all aware, our van is up for sale.

Just had a couple here over 2 hours looking at it, then proceeded to offer £1500 less than I am asking.

This leads me to wonder - do I look like a "mug"?

I know you expect to negotiate on a sale, but I think offering that much less is a cheek, how much "less" than you are asking do you accept?

Common sense must prevail - it all depends whether you are desperate for a quick sale or can you hold out for the asking price. Also what extras are you prepared to throw in as "good will". At this time of year I would have thought that the demand for used caravans would result in a quick sale near to the initial asking price. It must be a difficult decision to know when to shake on an agreement and when to say no. Good luck in your sale and I hope you have a more suitable offer.

Lolly, the reason I no longer deal in cars and 'vans is because there are so many tossers around, and I have a relatively short fuse with said people.

One 'van I had advertised at

People try in on all the time. I've had this selling horses but after a while, you can spot the genuine ones and the timewasters. Some people come along with the cash and wave it under your nose, (or a gyppo's roll). Sometimes the seller crumbles and gives in, in the heat of the moment. Not me, nor you.

Two hours must be a record though. I really wouldn't take it to heart too much, it is insulting but there's loads of chancers out there.

I hope you showed them the door and a kick up their backside wouldn't have gone amiss either.

Did they come as they had seen it on ebay, or did they see the advert elsewhere?

Cheeky sods!

I think they saw it on Autotrader as they are not e-bayers.

I also offered to deliver it to the site they are putting it on, which is over 100 miles from our house, FOR FREE!!

I feel quite disheartened :(

No - don't offer to deliver it FOC, most people seem to charge around 40p mile, some charge that both ways too.

Don't feel disheartened, someone else will be along soon.

Chin up.

Hi Colin

I did tell them the lowest I would go was 8k they said they will ring me.

No way are we giving up caravanning, would like to change to an Arizona with the side dinette, Abbey has loads of coursework at school and that would be her own "space" to work from when we go away, instead of being sprawled over the fixed bed

Thanks for your words, I do feel somewhat disheartened though, as I say I do expect people to negotiate but it has quite upset me

What you want to do is cost up the extras and if you are offered another lower than expected figure do not include the extras but sell them seperately. Tell them at that price you cannot afford to include the extras. I sold an awning on this web site last year to a chap from Scotland. He even agreed to have it picked up by a colleague who was at the time working in south Wales. He made no attempt to knock the price down.

I had thought of that as the chap said they didnt want the awnings, thing is though, I wouldn't know how much to sell them for on their own. They are both Dorema, one is 1055cm and has been used once, the other is also Dorema and is a 3/4 awning.

I am quite an easy going person but I tell you, he has really upset me :(

I don't think you are too soft Lolly I just think there are a lot of people out there who for whatever reasons, try as hard as they can to knock down the price.

He might have even been thinking of selling it on himself at a profit, who knows?

Ask yourself a question. Would you go and look at a BMW when you could only afford a mini? (Slight exaggeration but you know what I mean).

Try not to take it personally.

Hi Lisa

Thanks for your kind words, I suppose I felt a bit sorry for them as their towcar wouldn't have towed the van, hence me offering to tow to their site for them.

I did have a call from a chap in Hereford (is that Lord B's territory) who was supposed to call and let me know if he is coming to view tomorrow but have heard nothing.

Suppose I will just have to wait and see what happens!

Hi Colin

Thanks for that. The awning is a Madison.

Just checked Towsures website, the step is a single step which is 11.99, hook up is a 25m which is 23.95, and I also forgot to say, I paid 49.95 for a new battery last week.

I think I will stick to my guns for the asking price.

Just checked the web page - Unfortunately the Madison is not a 2007 year listed model.

I used to sell my caravans privately, but got totally sick and tired of the time wasters & romancers, the people who would phone you up and arrange a time to come and view, and like a prize plonker you would sit in all afternoon and they never show up. Now days to save me the possibility of having a heart attack, seizure, or ending up in court for GBH I do a px at the dealers, empty the van and sell the things that are of no use to me again on ebay, okay granted I might lose a few quid but it keeps my blood pressure down!!! Or the ones that really used to wind me up were the know it all's who would come and look at my immaculate caravan / car in an old rusty heap of a car, and pick fault in the hope of getting the price down. But don't let me put you off, there are lot's of genuine buyers out there, so stick to your guns and don't budge from your lowest price you have in mind. By the way we have a 2007 Arizona excellent van.

Allan & Gill.

Lolly,

Why are you selling your awning? Is it because it won't fit your next van.If so, have you thought about getting it altered? It's a good bit cheaper than buying a new awning.
