Dogs to France

Anyone got personal(not hearsay) experience of taking dogs to France? We're going the long way(portsmouth to st Malo) does the dog have to stay in the car all the time? If so are you allowed to visit the car deck to check? Have you had a problem with French vets? Obviosly,we're very nervous of taking her. All help greatly appreciated.
 
we have taken our dogs (both with and without caravan) to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Austria and Switzerland a number of times.

Never had any problem.

I took my dog to France last year. We travelled on the Portsmouth/Cherbourg rote (5hours). The dog had to stay in the car and I was allowed one visit during the crossing to see him (dog was asleep when I visited). The French vets are very helpful and they will vaccinate the dog against the fox tapeworm and also administer a type of "frontline. They will stamp the pet passport to this effect and charge you the equivalent of
