When we are caravanning our dog sleeps in a basket at home! If she did come with us she would absolutely not be allowed out of the awning into the van. At home she is not allowed upstairs never mind on our beds. She is well groomed, flea treated and clean but I wouldn't want to sleep in her basket. I'm with Lisa, the dog is a dog not a baby.

Sorry, I know this is going to get me some flack, but reading this thread supplies a damn good reason to buy vans brand new.

'Reading this thread supplies a damn good reason to buy vans brand new' Can i just say that my dogs sleep on a duvet with a cover on it so they don't actually touch the bed in the caravan. If I decided to sell my caravan which I probably never will I would have the carpets and sofa upholstered regardless of whether I owned a dog or no. But if I invited you to look at my caravan I could guarantee that you wouldn't no a dog had been in it just because I choose to love my pets doesn't mean I am dirty and I take offence to that. If you had a baby you could probably say that a baby would be sick in the caravan because unfortunately when little this is what happens. Dirty nappies to change give me a dog anyday! Everyone to there own but I wouldn't want a caravan which had a sickly baby in it so I will always buy brand new then you know what you are getting. Won't be asking Lisa or mel to dog sit my dogs lol.

Each to their own Mandy. You may wish to note that i did not accuse anyone of being dirty. I am merely making the point that I wouldn't want to share my bed with a dog or historically with other peoples dogs. Baby sick or nappies I have no problem with. I appreciate that you would not want me to dog sit your dogs. Our dog is actually very well cared for and well loved, and Lisa (who, I am sure does not need me to comment) appears to have a great deal of expertise with dogs. Still I knew that I would get some flack. All the best.

To you Doggy people.

Are you sure that you, your caravan, your car and your home does not smell of dog?

Anyone can get accustomed to anything given time.

To Big Al, Little Al, any other Al's or non-doggy people.

No, I'm not sure if my caravan, car or home smells doggy and neither do I care. I'm sure if it was really offensive my snout would pick up the odour. What I do find offensive though is others poking their 'holier than thou' snouts into my business and telling dog owners how to live their lives.

No offence intended and thanks for your concern over whatever your concerns are, maybe our health, but I've survived this long and besides, we have the politically correct pillocks in this country now telling us what to do, they are more than enough to cope with :O)

Big Al

Sometimes dog (or cat) bedding can get a bit whiffy. Our launderette has a washing machine for pet bedding. If I can get the pet bedding in it, I'll wash it there, otherwise, I'll throw it away and buy new.

I wouldn't dream of putting pet bedding in my washing machine. Does my house smell doggy? I've no idea.

One thing that really does turn my stomach and apologies if anyone does this is, after cooking, some people put their pans, roasting tin etc down on the floor for the dogs to 'clean' before washing the pan etc. Now, I think that is absolutely disgusting, whether you have a high temperature dish washer or not. Just my opinion.

Would you eat out of your dogs bowl?

Reading through half these comments (too many to read all of them) there are clearly dog lovers and dog loathers. Anyone who has a domestic dog should treat it as part of the family and that means access to the home and caravan, etc. If not, why have a dog? It is more of a question of cleanliness, keeping the caravan and the dog clean, and if that sounds like hard work don't have a dog!

Yes, we do have a dog, two in fact, and our caravan is covered in sheets (floor and cushions) to keep everywhere clean when the dogs are around. By the way, they're a great (the best) environmentally friendly hot water bottle!

Lesley asked "Dogs- Where should they slep"?

Why on earth do all the dog haters and noaners and groaners find it necessary to chastise people like me , even alluding to BO? Well they should have said DO.

The original carpets from my caravan are in the loft, All the seats have fitted covers that we made with pretty material from the market. Their own bed, a big duvet and cover are washed regularly.

We had dogs in the last caravan and I can tell you that did not smell of dogs in fact our dealer thought it was one of the cleanest 2nd hand caravans he'd seen. It sold in less than a week.

Long live the dog.

Cheers

There are a few posts on here that mention smells, well I have to be honest, I have encountered a number of people who are far more odorous (if thats a word) than any dog I have had the pleasure of meeting.

I've had dogs all my life and done quite a few things with them rather than just take them for a walk twice a day. We had some good racing dogs in the past too.

I prefer to keep mine in the awning and in crates at night. Means we have no dog hairs to hoover up in the van, we don't have to bother putting throws all over the place etc, no spilt water bowls in the van.

What works for one, doesn't always means it'll work for another. Smiley icon thingy.

We've had a good laugh here, and I have cats that don't caravan. Two sleep on the foot of the bed at home and nowhere else.

I hope Lisa is not going to get upset.

Automatic washing machines and dishwashers clean what you put in to them. If they are working correctly what goes in should come out clean.

It doesn't matter if its a dogs quilt cover or your beds cover.

My husband has beeb putting his grease and dirt covered overalls in our washers for year and they come out clean as does everything else.

These washing ideas about what goes in and what does not is like some dark age fear and superstition.

Would I eat from my cats bowls, yes if they have been through the dishwasher. We only use pottery or stainless bowls and I would never worry that they were not clean enough to eat from. If I had any doubts I wouldn't let our babies eat from them.

Thingy for Lisa :)

Dog hairs, throws everywhere, spilt water bowls, have you been sneaking a look into my van?

Hi Sadie

Our cat sleeps at the foot of our bed too, not the dogs though, it's a canine psychology thing coupled with other issues as stated previously, but that's not for here as the woman from Fat Fighters would say.

He, he, he. If I had a pound for everytime I knock their water bowl over at home, I'd be a rich woman and then I wouldn't need a caravan, I'd have a holiday home in the country.

I'm getting confused now. Which person is the Alan who met Joanne?

Lisa
Hi we have 2 springer's which both sleep in the caravan.one sleeps on her rug near the door where as the other lays under pull out bit that makes seating area into a bed.

in the middle of night you can hear him snore.

if we took our 4 cats with us they'd all sleep on the bed with us.

We have 3 greyhounds and we make up the other bed in the front of the caravan for them.
Quite simply I would prefer to see dogs kept in an awning or in a car. I have noticed them left in a van when the owners are away from their van, and noticed how they can jump on the seats to see whatever is happening around them. Is that fair on a person buying a second hand van?

I have a little Wisp 300/2 and two Flatcoat Retrievers. I am on my own and jolly glad to have my lovely dogs in my van at night!

I sleep on one bunk and they have the other one. I put a waterproof mattress cover on it and then a throw, and lastly their fleeces. They are going to have to move up though- I have recently added a Golden pup to our family!!

Gawd Al, try and keep up with the play. You replied to me since then on the 13th about another post so you've obviously been going back over the thread with a fine toothcomb.

How the hell do you expect me to remember a post from 5 days ago let alone having to scroll back that far :O(

On second thoughts, even though I have an arthritic joint in my index scrolling finger, I decided to go back and look for fear of my life because you're 'big'.

In that post I was replying to Sparkle, trying to help her find some playmates for her dogs .... heh! heh! heh!

I'm glad you bit though Al, I thought I was slipping up in my dotage, even our Sadie didn't bite cos she knows me by now ... :O)
