Our dogs would be across a site and over another two fields before you could type your fist two lines above Parksy. That's why they are confiend to the car or inside the caravan. If we had them in the awning or surrounded by wind breaks they would see them as a challenge to get under if we took our eyes off them. We wouldn't want dogs peeing on ur awning or aquaroll so they are confined and tethered if the caravan door is open other people seem to think that there dogs will stay where they put them. We did not have a dog for a few years but we've never had one that wouldn't be nosy and wander if it was given half a chance.
A bit like to many kids we see on sites

Allowing a dog to wee up the awning/aqua roll and associated items is well out of order.

There are some right dopey people around though. Long story short, we had a right pair of idiots next to us earlier on in the year, put a vicious (dog to dog) little untrained savage of a dog on a 30ft tow rope. Next morning, it was stuck under our car, tow rope tangled round the cars wheels.
smiley-surprised.gif
Later that morning, it jumped on one of my dogs whilst we (dog and I) were sitting outside minding our own business. It's a good job I had adhered to the rules of 'keep dogs on leads' because I was able to drag my dog away, but unfortunately, the dog on the tow rope wasn't tied to anything!! It just kept on coming.
smiley-cool.gif

One of the stupid owners (old woman, with ample breasts, not a pretty sight in a skimpy towel and nothing else) just stood there screaming. I picked the dog up by the scruff and returned it to her husband, along with the tow rope. It went on to bite and bother a lot of the other dogs on the campsite.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, people should have to pass an intelligence test before they are allowed to keep dogs, working or pets.

It's not a matter of spoiling lawns or plants - I just don,t want dogs peeing (and worse) near my pitch. If the offending dog was ill, it's even worse because of the risk of nasty infections. No, the only answer is segregation then dog owners can camp to their hearts' delight on their own contaminated ground!
I wish it was that easy to find dog-free sites - there must be a huge call for them; these days, virtually all sites are stuffed with dog owners, many of whom pay nothing extra and save vast amounts on kennelling fees.

I've yet to see a kid wee up an aquaroll, although I have to say that with some of them it wouldn't surprise me
smiley-undecided.gif

We have neither dogs or kids and I'm all for a bit of live and let live but it's always the minority who cause non dog owners to look at dog owners as social pariahs.
Nobody remembers the majority of responsible dog owners but we can all remember the careless owner who allows their dog to wander around unattended, the ones who decide to walk their dogs without a lead are the worst of all.
If a dog is loose it might have 'escaped' without the owners knowledge but the arrogant dog owners who deliberately leave their dogs off a lead on sites because they believe that their dog so well trained that they don't need a lead cause the most resentment and ill feeling.
When the dog is bounding towards somebody they never seem too bothered and they invariably look at the recipient of the unwanted canine attention as though they are the ones doing something wrong by not allowing their precious fido to sniff them, jump up them or make love to their leg.

As a two dog owner I feel qualified to complain about other dog owners anti-social behaviour and like Parksy I find the worse are those who believe that rules regarding dogs on leads doesn't apply to them due to their unrecognisable arrogance.
Regarding oldagetraveller smelling dog pee is laughable and he should rename himself to anotheragetraveller. I wonder how he would manage to stop badgers, foxes, hedgehogs etc. deficating or urinating. Does he smell the faeces or urine of foxes when scenting their territory for example? If so with a snout like that he's missing his vocation as a police sniffer dog ... heh! heh! heh!
smiley-laughing.gif

Now if he was complaining about the smell of human urine, especially in layby's, shop doorways or alleyways I could understand it.

Here oldagetraveller, just for you. It took me 2 seconds to find it, just as long as it took me to type 'dog free campsites' into Google ...

Thanks for your suggestions - very interesting!
Seriously, I adore well behaved dogs - it's just that, more and more, campsites are attracting those who simply seem to need a cheap alternative to kennelling.. This week, I saw both sides in evidence. One neighbour with 2 impeccably behaved dogs - the other with 1 dog which was thrown out of the van early each morning to do what he/she needed with no control whatsoever. This can't be right.

I'm sorry oldagetraveller but I have to disagree with you again regarding the kennelling. For myself, and I'm sure I speak for the majority of dog owners, cheapness doesn't come into it.
For ourselves we go caravanning because of the dogs. We wouldn't dream of putting them in kennels. As a non-doggy person I do understand that you won't understand but the fact is the dogs are part of our family. For this reason we forego foreign holidays or even a cruise, something I'd love to do. The dogs come first though
smiley-wink.gif

My daughter complained once that when she and her brothers were young we never had dogs and as soon they'd left home we had them. I told her that if I had known earlier what I knew now we wouldn't have had kids but dogs instead
smiley-laughing.gif

Regarding your other points I agree with you 100% and with the exception of CLs there is always at least one idiot I've come across who shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs as pets let alone bring them on camp sites.

The dog, as so rightly pointed out cannot use any facilities, however its cheaper to pay to take the dog on to these sites than it is to book it into kennels and the site owners know it,they also know that folk on the whole go for the cheaper option.
As for me, well our dog usually goes to my pearents depending on where we are going.

When we were looking to buy a caravan, one of the biggest attractions was that we could take the dogs on holiday with us. I haven't got a problem putting the dogs in kennels but I'd rather have them with me. I don't trust some people when it comes to my dogs.

Anyway, this subject has been done to death over the years and I don't think it will ever stop being raised or being an issue. Bit like unruly kids, windbreaks and 4x4's.

As Lisa says this has been done to death as have the 4x4 etc.
As a two dog owner I am very mindful that any misdemeanors on my or my dogs part will spoil everything for the majority of other dog owners.
I think those owners who break the rules , just once, should be shown a yellow card. One more offence they're kicked off site.
smiley-wink.gif

I also have a theory that thoughtful dog owners generally care more for the environment than others.Just keep a discreet eye open who doesn't wash their hands after using the toilet or who doesn't check the toilet pan is clean after use!
smiley-yell.gif
They are NOT dog owners.

The caravan Club recently carried out a detailed survey of members on the dog subject. Dogs will continue to be allowed on all sites subject to the reasonable long standing rules. Perhaps the CC would like to publish more details of that survey in due course?

Sadly the real dog offenders are not purist tuggers imo and unfortunately they probably don't read these type of forum nor the PC mag etc.
Rather than castigate all dog owners let's make sure any offenders are reported and the penalties for breaches of dog behaviour dealt with accordingly within the rules .

That's got to be one of the silliest and most sweeping statements I've ever read on any forum anywhere
smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif

Geez DD, I bet your holidays are a laugh a minute, do you actually go into the bog after these people to check?!?!?
I can assure you that as a non dog owner I use a lavatory brush if necessary to leave things as I'd expect to find them AND I wash my hands every time after using the toilet!
I also care for the environment to such an extent that I don't keep an animal that cr@ps all over it!!

We've seen them do it on pitches and in hedges behind other peoples caravans

Aha, Got you going Parksy
smiley-laughing.gif
. Sometimes the crass stupidity of some of the statements on here just make all sense of reasonableness flushh down the toilet.
smiley-wink.gif

I assure you with no effort on my part there are those who leave the bog without washing their hands! This all goes back to cleanliness and charity which starts at home. I really don't want to stereo type anyone but as you know East is East and West is West, but will the twain met?? I hope so.
Trouble is Parksy you are a romantic and a Mr Nice Guy. Unfortunately there are those who don't know what the toilet flush lever is nor the loo brush. And that's before the dogs and 4x4 etc.

.

As a matter of interest I have noticed a number of sites this year issuing "Guides for dog ownwers ,rules on site"

I enjoy a daft statement now and then Dustydog, I had a mental picture of you photographing the 'evidence' and keeping a kind of family album of soiled toilet bowls with scores of between 1 and 10.
smiley-laughing.gif

Believe me, I've seen plenty of evidence of unhygenic habits on various sites that we've visited over the past eleven years but I'd hesitate to say whether that the worst offenders were dog owners or not. To be honest unless the site facillities are absolutely spotlessly clean we prefer to use our on board facillities rather than risk the communal ones.
We're a bit more knowledgeable nowadays but when we started caravanning we naiveley and unnkowingly visited sites which looked ok but with disgusting toilet and shower facilities and awful people using them.
I've nothing against dog owners or parents of kids, I like to see reasonably well behaved children playing safely in the great outdoors and the majority of dog owners behave responsibly but it's the old lowest common denominator that leaves the lasting impression which give rise to these internet discussions.

Only last week at Orchard Park, Boston, the first shower cubicle I went into had skid marks down the back of the pan (pukey icon thingy). Needless to say I chose another one, not that I use the bogs. I refuse to park my buttocks on a public toilet seat preferring to use our own especially as I'm toilet monitor.
After showering I was drying my hair and a chap came in for a pee and left without washing his hands which leads me onto why do toilet doors open inwards? If they opened outwards at least I could open the door with my foot. Not nice having to use the door handle after he'd been handling his John Thomas
smiley-frown.gif

Even famous people don't wash as I can verify. My only claim to fame was having a pee next to Alan Titchmarsh and he left without washing his hands

I think sites should have separate areas for dog owners, sub divided into “responsible” & “Irresponsible” owners. There should also be a separate area for families with children. Just inside the gate the area should be reserved for those who ignore the site speed limit, that will stop them having to pass my pitch. A special area is needed for twin axles so the rest of us don’t have to suffer churned up pitches. The area next to the water point needs saving for those who cut across pitches, likewise the area by the wash block should be for those who wear pink velvet joggers or dressing gowns. My morning view won’t be spoilt then. To one side should be an area for BBQ’s . That way the smell of burnt burgers won’t make me feel I’m pitched in a KFC car park. An area, preferably under trees, should be the domain of the Sat Dish brigade who do their best to convert the site into a fair impersonation of NASSA. Next to them could be those displaying their smalls on gigantic washing lines. Separate areas should be available for those who like loud music, those who snore and people with hacking smokers coughs. An area outside the site is needed for the “early risers/car door slammers/chatty early morning walkers”.
Sorry if I've missed your group out.
Finally, an area is needed for miserable old gits! I’m sure that would be the biggest.

Just to denigrate even further Parksy this reminds me of the Gillian Tayleforth slander action a few years ago. On National TV the then Editor of the Sun was asked what advice he would give to similar slander Plaintiffs. He said and I quote verbatim: "Do not swallow the evidence"

LB I have the solution for you with those inbound opening doors. Get some of those plastic gloves the fuel stations give out when you fill up with diesel. Latex are also available very cheaply with or without talc.
smiley-laughing.gif
Whether they do flavours I've no idea.

I already use the service station gloves for my toilet monitor duties DD
smiley-laughing.gif

I've also bought two packs of gloves this morning from our local DIY.
What I refuse to do though is go to the toilet for a pee wearing gloves. People might think I have a contagion

Don't we need a 'miscellaneous' area though? I once saw a chicken tied to a corner steady on a site in Cumbria.

OH DEAR!!! Sometimes I think if I was considering becoming a caravanner I would be having second thoughts. It has always been my strongest defence to anti-caravan remarks that we are, on the whole, friendly, helpful and tolerant of our fellow caravanners. Please lets all try to get along in at least one area of life.It is a sad fact that some people will not follow rules and have little regard for others. Hopefully these sort of folk will quickly decide that caravanning is not for them. It seems that dogs, kids, and almost everything and everybody is a nuisance to someone at some time.No man is an island but we all need a life raft at some time and who knows maybe those nuisances on the next pitch could be just that!!! We are guilty on the following counts- 2dogs,4x4,twin axle, sat dish and god forgive me A ROTARY clothes line. If you see a caravan with a cross painted on the door that will be us. Avoid like the plague!!!!

I'm with you Lord B and have often wished toilet doors opened outwards. Definately don't want to touch the handle after washing my hands, especially in a cafe before I eat. If someone comes out of a cubicle and goes to leave without washing his hands
smiley-yell.gif
I usually catch the door with my foot to avoid touching where he has. Sorry but I don't want to eat after touching mine never mind someone elses - at least I know where mine has been.......
Also as a non dog owner/lover I've no problem with responsible owners but just last week I narrowly missed stepping in dog poo on a site in Scarborough. Have to admit if I'd seen the offending owner I would have asked him/her to deal with it and if this didn't have the desired effect, would dispose of it myself (using disposable gloves kept in 'van for emptying loo cassette) by dumping it on their doorstep. Maybe if they felt the disgust of scrapping steaming poo of their shoes they'd think in future.
Sorry if this topic has been done to death before but until dogs can be trained to clean up after themselves then It'll go on forever.

2. You obviously have the jumbo sized pitches so please book us one. Our dogs like space to roam

3. Parksy , we prefer our meat on the rare side please. However the dogs Pinky and Perky don't mind them well done.
4.I promise they will not mess up LB or Parksy's aquaroll, well not before it's dark .
