Getting ready for the winter and I was wondering if anyone knows how to empty the tank where the pink fluid goes? The caravan is a 1998 ABI Award Transtar.

Not sure of the exact design of your model but if you have a look in the locker space where the cassette toilet is you should find either a rubber plug or a plastic tube with a plug at the end. This is often located at the front above where the cassette slides in and out.
Thanks Rob. I noticed that there is a screw plug just below the filler cap and, as you say, located above where the cassette slides in and out.

I drain mine after every outing just to be on the safe side incase of leaks ect you never know and its too late if it does leak. when draining i used to remove the rubber bung but its a pain to put back so i just flush the system now untill empty less mess and quicker

I agree that it can be quicker and ,depending on where drain plug situated, also less messy to drain into the cassette but I've found that even when apparently empty by that method if I open the drain plug there is still quite a bit of fluid left. There would probably be enough to cause a problem if it froze. I would recommend erring on the side of caution and drain the remnants via the drain plug.

Agree with all the comments about the use of the drain plug, I also flush the system through to make sure all the pink fluid is out of the system,stops the possibility of the black algae from forming in the flush tank, additionally, use a silicone type spray recommended by the loo manufacturers to spray the sliding seal between bowl and holding tank, stops the seal drying up over winter.

I always drain my flush tank before moving off site. At 1Kg per litre, water is heavy stuff to tow around!

Yes your right never thought of the bit in the bottom even after the flushing has finished will do though next time.

Alex. I used to get black bits in flush water. I added a bit of milton into flush water for one weekend and it seems to have cured the problem. I also at the same time changed from Thetford to Elsan and had no black bits all summer. Thanks, Dan.

It is a silicone sealant spray made by Thetford, I can't tell you the exact details right now (In the gulf of Mexico) but check out the caravan stores, I'll also get the correct info for you next week when I'm home before I head of to Derbyshire for a few days

I flushed the system through after every outing to make sure there was no "pink" left in the water, then used a Thetford Flush tank cleaner 4 times a year.However I think I'll try Dan's recommendation and switch to Elsan.

Trev, I hope you really haven't got sealant or you'll never get the toilet blade open. I take it you're talking about silicone seal spray? I had a can of the Thetford stuff that lasted for years, had to buy a new supply this spring and found Halfords sell same stuff but not Thetford brand much cheaper. Its also good for lubricating the awning channel.
