Hi

We are going to spend 2 weeks next year around Lake Garda and have been speaking to a few people about driving around Milan. I am asking for peoples advise as they said it would be one of the last places they would be going whilst pulling a caravan. Firstly is it as bad as they are making out? if so is there another way to get to Lake Garda without going around Milan?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi there, I used to drive round it in a 38 tonner. Its no different from driving round London, Paris, Madrid etc.etc. Try to pass after rush hour if you are worried but just remember one thing - a flash of head lights from behind does NOT mean you can pull out to overtake. If you do you will get a lot of unfamiliar sign language when that person comes past you. Take it steady, take your time, Drive relaxed and enjoy yourselves.

I have used the Milan route to Lake Garda, no problems except for the queuing because we arrived during rush hour(s) The alternative is to use the German Austria route then down the eastern side of Lake Garda, this route is also cheaper as the vignette in Austria is only for the car and much cheaper than the Swiss two you need for a car and caravan.

except assuming you take the same route there and back you pay twice.. twice to use the brenner pass and twice for the 10 day vignette so bringing the saving down to a euro or 2.. the route is also longer in miles and so you need a little more fuel each way .. and the route is longer in time too...so the saving is,seeing some lovely Austrian country .

Remember that if the OP drives into Austria from Germany, unless he has a Tempo100 sticker (one requirement for which is that the caravan must be fitted with shock absorbers) he is limited to 80kph on the autobahn.
