Had a wonderful holiday at Culkein/Drumbeg in the last 2 weeks, of course we expected it to rain and gales but the sun did come out a few times but it did not spoil the holiday ,however as usual when we got home to Hastings most of the pot plants were burnt and some completly dead. I always drench them and have water granuels in the pots but the heat just bakes them. Fortunatly the lawns were ok this time so how do you go on about your gardens.

We used to use 2 or 3 litre bottles (with caps on) with a couple of small holes in one end, as the sun heats the bottle some water is released and when the bottle cools at night some air is sucked back.

It took a little fine tuning but did work, might go back to it next year as the in-laws forgot to water this year.

You can also get timed water meters that fit on your hose/sprinkler fitting.

Glad to hear you had a great holiday.

Regarding the watering - We have a retired neighbour who comes round to attend to the animals (bar the dogs) and the garden when we are away. We do put all the containers together in a shaded area so it is easier for him to water them.

Aparently, he likes coming round to our house as it gives him the opportunity to get away from his wife.

We also had a kind neighbour but he died two years ago and our nearest neighbour is a caravanner and we seem to go about the same time but with him he has family around to water his plants ,our family is 85miles away. The lemonade bottle upturned does work for a short time ,we put small pots in the garage but we have those which are 4ft plus and the only shade we have is very small as the sun is on the property from first light to sundown.
