Ladies & Gentlemen - please do not be offended if you do not have a reply from me at present if you have forwarded any e-mails to me as my e-mail system is not functioning. Every time I try to access it I end up with the stystem having numerous attempts with no luck.
 
I am toying with buying a new tower system as this is so slow and possibly affected by viruses. There are many programmes on the machine which are not connected to the internet system which I would like to copy onto the new machine. I will not copy any internet related programmes. I will be having the internet reloaded as a new entity as Windows XP. If I do this will I be transferring any form of virus off this old machine - I think one virus is that which has recently been highlighted on here - virus or a con.

I'm no computer buff and my computer was affected by the virus which was hidden in the scam anti virus package highlighted on this forum.

I did have a go at removing it myself after much reading of instructions from internet sites which gave good advice but I don't think that I was 100% successful because although I could access emails etc the computer still seemed to run slowly.

In the end I took the tower to a local computer shop where a spotty kid listened to my tale of woe and I left the computer with him for the rest of the day.

I picked the tower up the next morning, paid

Before you go and possibly spend a lot of hard earned loot on a new machine, unless you really wish to upgrade, have a think about the problem. If you have the same virus I mentioned in my Post, then get rid of it as quickly as possible as it will hijack your keystrokes for passwords etc. As mentioned by others, there are some free programs that will remove it, although not Macafee or Norton, however I purchased PC Doctor which did the trick.

The other thing is if you feel your machine has been 'invaded' then do not copy any of your programs to the new machine or you will just transfer the viruses. Re load using the original CD's if possible.

One thing you could do is have a look at all the software on your machine and get rid of anything you do not use, or even only rarely use. Be brutal and that will get rid of a lot of stuff that slows your start up. There are also tools that will look at your Registry and remove a lot of unused or even 'naughty' stuff that has managed to get on there. One program that seems quite good is

However, I am not a computer expert by any means, so if the machine you have is still good enough, then possibly a visit to a computer geek to sort thing out,might be a lot cheaper than a new one. He may also upgrade the various bits of your machine aswell. but again, be very careful what you transfer.

If you take it in to be repaired, a word of warning, don't have any pictures of your children or grandchildren on the PC.

You may get a knock on the door from the police.
 
Pictures are fine - what you're talking about is in a different league, fortunately! Please don't scare people into thinking they can't have innocent photographs of children on their computer.

I had the same problem yesterday with my email account. As I live not a million miles from you i'm wondering if it was BT exchange problem. All working fine today.

The problem is that in our current mad mad world, we have to prove our innocence. Having any pictures on your computer will allow some jobsworthy somewhere to assume that you are guilty of an offence.

The best way is to delete everything before handing it over, and of course use a proper deletion program, not Microsoft's, and ensure no questions asked.

It is ridiculous I agree, but that is the mad world we now have.
 
I've changed my internet security to Microsoft "Security Essentials" since Microsoft abandoned Onecare.

Assuming that most people use a PC "Security Essentials" comes from Microsoft and works well as they should know how their own system works. Unlike Norton and others who have to work around Microsofts system.
 
Microsoft should indeed know, but as many computer experts will tell you, Microsoft is notorious for security lapses, and often relies on customer feedback to identify 'holes' and then makes patches. However, as it is by far the biggest player in the patch, we have to live with its foibles.

It is also the case that most ISP providers nowadays give you a package with a security system included, either Norton or macafee or similar. While this is not compulsory it can sometimes lead to 'conflicts' within your Machine if you try to avoid using it. BT is bad for this and will always keep trying to direct you back to their 'system'. Of course having more than one system operating will be even worse as they conflict with each other and you get no benefits.

Each player is trying to 'lock' you in as much as possible to stop you swopping to another ISP. Internet fraud is also the biggest crime area on the planet, and can only get worse as more of us are 'encouraged' to do everything on line. One can also have a 'Frankenstein' moment and believe that at some date in the future we will all be 'controlled' through the Web and some 'master' will be in charge. Heaven help us.
 
Val, it wasn't too long ago that a well known TV presenter was arrested for photos of her children on her PC.

She was reported by a well known national computer company, the media made another circus out of it. Of course she was found totally innocent of any wrong doing.

I wonder if she got any apologies from anyone.

And as Scotch lad says we are presumed guilty until we can prove otherwise.

Son also having problems with other sites which require logging on, so I am going to kick this machine into touch and invest in new computer. Perhaps Father Christmas will be kind to me - who knows. I will therefore in the near future be off air for a while until new machine is delivered, but like the Terminator - I WILL RETURN. All I need to do is to down load personal stand alone files which have no contact with the internet with the hope that they are not infected with any virus.

One last thing you could try is to re-install Windows from your CD. This will delete everything on your hard drive so ensure you have backed up what you want. It will also undo all the updates from microsoft so you will need to reload them. However, it will restore your machine to the pristine condition it was in when you bought it. It is a lot cheaper too./
