“ Is this good news for the caravan industry” an earlier thread picked up on the closure. Not good news though for the workers at Eldiss, but for quite a while now there have been reports of problems, unsold caravans etc so it hasn’t come as a major surprise. Pity as I had hopes that Hymer could improve the company’s products and standing.
Not that I know of. Elddis have been at Consett for over 60 years. I thought it was only the caravan, not the motorhome production that was ceasing. Are their touring caravans built elsewhere in Britain?
Found thisFrom a thread by Birdman my reading is that motorhome production will move to a Hymer facility but with them being designed by Eldiss. That seems as if how ACE are being introduced by Swift as a campervan, motorhome range, but built in Britain.
I could read that two ways. One production stays in Britain, the other being production abroad but design and support remains in Britain. No doubt time will clarify. One facet though is where will existing owners of caravans obtain support? Dealerships will undoubtedly be worried too.Found this
“While production is proposed to come to an end, the firm says a new Elddis firm will be based in Consett, focussing on motorised recreational vehicles. It said the new campervan and motorhome ranges will be specified and designed by Elddis “utilising the high-performance production network of Elddis’ parent company Erwin Hymer Group (EHG)”.
If true then motor homes production will continue at Consett site. I’m sure we will learn more as the day progresses. A sad day for the employees .
My understanding is different - all production will end at Consett - the site will be restricted to design and sales of Elddis branded campervans built in Eastern EuropeFound this

I honestly think if Hymer had been in charge, then things might have changed, but for me there was always something fishy about the Elldis take over. These sorts of take overs are usually months in the making execution, often behind closed doors. Realistically 9 to 12 months if all goes well. So the fact that Hymer was bought out by Thor Industries just a few months later, the two transactions must have overlapped, I suspect Thor was behind the whole thing and pulling the strings.“ Is this good news for the caravan industry” an earlier thread picked up on the closure. Thanks Prof that would be useful. Hope they get you discharged soonest. 🤞I currently don't have access to my usual industry contacts having been incase rated in the QEHB since the middle of January, but if I get a sniff that isn't commercially sensitive, I'll let you all know
Yes , the spiel,so far is others interpretation. I expect we shall see the official script today, maybe? My understanding is different - all production will end at Consett - the site will be restricted to design and sales of Elddis branded campervans built in Eastern Europe
I guessing that since there's only one journalistic report about this so far that there's been no press release - possibly a union official, consulted about redundancy, and the tippling the local newspaper off - so a formal announcement may still be some way away.Yes , the spiel,so far is others interpretation. I thought one of the reasons British car companies were taken over, or failed, was because so many of their models were of poor quality. Hence the inroads of the Japanese into the car industry and motorcycle industry, and European ones too. But their reliability wasn’t always top notch when compared to Japanese and latterly Korean makes.Similar action has happened in both the British car and motorcycle industry, higher quality small companies taken over then "merged" to become a larger conglomerate, resulting in down grading and loss of jobs
It was a combination of incompetent UK politicians, incompetent UK management and intransient UK work force - in contrast the Germans seem to have managed it ok judging by VW Group with 8 car brands, 3 commercial vehicle brands and a motorbike brand as well as Hymer's 21 RV brands - at least until they got taken over by Thor.Similar action has happened in both the British car and motorcycle industry, higher quality small companies taken over then "merged" to become a larger conglomerate, resulting in down grading and loss of jobs
Your wish is my command. DoneThere are two threads running about Elddis. Is it possible for the Mods to sort and sift?
