Luminance and Brightness are not the same thing.

Luminance, measured in Lumens, is a measure of the light emitted at the source and all things being equal is constant.

Brightness varies depending on distance. So the further away you are the dimmer the light source appears.

Well they never covered that gem when I was “exiled” for 4 months to AEI Lamp and Lighting at Buckie during my apprenticeship.
 
So they didn't throw any light on the subject. 🙂

Reminds me of a Goonshow joke when Seagoon says 'What, what, what, what' and I think Grytpype-Thynne says 'Only four whats - not very bright is it'
 
It must have been 4 months in summer when they don't need the lights on that far north!
That would have been nice but unfortunately it was November to March. For a city teenager it was a pretty dismal experience being exiled from friends in such a small town. The work was interesting but the apres travail left much to be desired.
