Hello Do you need to have the battery in place when you hook up to the electric supply ?

It depends on the charger/transformer that you have installed.

Until quite recently it was necessary to have a battery installed to smooth out the output from the charger in order to avoid damaging electronics in TV etc

My van is 14 years old and when it is parked outside my house I plug in the mains cable with no battery on board. I then use the sockets inside the van to plug the hoover in to clean the van. Make sure if there is a charger unit in your van it is switched to mains power.

The problem with using older non smoothed chargers without a battery is damage to 12V equipment such as TV,

John, I probably assumed that will just wanted to plug something into the mains sockets in his van like a hoover or lamp or mains tv. The mains supply to the van goes into the power unit and through fuses then either to the 230v sockets or the charger. So the 230v sockets can be used independantly of the 12v supply. They are seperate circuits.

You should have a battery in place if you are using the 12v supply in the van via the charger unit and as John said direct feed through the transformer without a battery in place could damage a tv running off 12v.

I was asking because i know that if yourun a motorcycle with no battery you can do other damage (regulator/rectifier).
