Electrical problem, help please!

So you recommend having it wired to the main transformer?

Is that a simple job? (Dont worry, I'm not going to attempt it myself, I'm just asking?)

Thanks again for you help Damian, I may have some quesions for you soon, need to get this problem out of the way first 🙂
 
Martyn, as I work repairing caravans I cannot comment on items which I have no knowledge.

Also it is not best practice to use an untried and tested application of a power supply on an application it was not specifically made for.

Rewiring the pump to the 12vDC would be simple for an electrician, it is just a simple 2 core wire to the distribution box, if you keep the operation as it is now.
 
Martyn, as an electrical person with 50 years experience in electrical engineering, please get this sorted and tested by a qualified electrician.

240 volts is deadly and so can 12 volts DC in the right (or should I say wrong)conditions.

I'm sorry but I have to echo the last two posts.

For some reason you do not seem to be able to understand the information you have been given. Consequently I have major misgivings that you will be able to safely resolve your pump problem without calling in a proper expert to test and fix the problem.

If proper attention to detail in electrical wiring is not observed, the safety of you and your family may be out at risk.
 
Calm down people, I'm not going to attempt anything myself. I know how to connect an adaptor, which I would have done myself, but as Damian has said its a simple job for an electrician to wire it up to the caravan, so thats what I will do.

John I am sorry that I dont understand some of the technical 'info' that has been thrown at me, like I said, I am not an electrician.

NO dont consider that, it is totally overkill for a submersible pump and the fitted unit in the van is more than adequate for it, as well as the other 12v applications.

But it is perfectly safe. And i appear to be the only one prepared to assist in the repair. Rather than just scare mongering, i have actually come up with a perfectly safe option.

With out knowing the consumption requirements of the pump in question, i could not recommended the 5 amp plugin psu that martyn had looked at on ebay, they may be man enough for the job, but they could also represent a fire risk?

What i do know, with absolute certainty, is that martyn can use this plug in psu, with total confidence, having worked with such devices for 25 years.

By the time you have paid an electrician to carry out the works required, you will be approaching the price od the psu anyway?

As martyn says, you need to calm down.

The reason i chose the 15amp version? my pump is fused 15amp.
 
how old is this van?. didnt it come with a sink and taps when it was new?. why did the previous owner have to fit these?. if it has 12v lights it must have a battery and charger surely. ray.
 
In answer to Ray, th ewiring up of the pump to the already fitted PSU should take no more tan 30 minutes for an electrician.

A sub pump draws a maximum of 5 amps.

You obviously do not know about Hobby electrics or you would not be recommending that item.

I am quite calm about it, as I think Martyn is too.

Raymond, many of the large Hobby vans were built without washrooms, toilets, sinks, taps etc and are known as "Dry" vans.

This is because the main market for them is Germany and the German caravanner does not use on board facilities like UK vans.

They will only use on site facilities, so gain extar living space in the van.
