Electrical

I have just returned from France & on our second week went to a new site were we kept tripping out the electric after it happened twice I went all over the electrical system to discover the connection to our caravan was hot & the neg. wire had burnt out I replaced the plug & run all the cable off the drum this seemed to cure the problem. My question is, should I have taken all the cable off the drum, ( the cable is about 25 meters ) or would It be better to have two 12 meter cables which I can join if necessary.
Thanks for any input.

The supply cable should never be left wound up on the drum. Unwind it completely and lay it in lengths alongside the caravan. If it remains wound on the drum it will get hot and the more amps you put through the cable, the quicker it will heat up.
