Electrolux rm 4230 fridge

On a recent trip in our van the fridge would not work on mains.

When we switched on it tripped all power in van and the mains bollard at hookup.Switched off fridge and all was well with mains power.

Just used fridge on gas.

Tried van on mains back home but same thing, tripped power in van.

Anyone had a similar problem, any checks worth carrying out.

Or does anyone know a good mobile caravan service person in or around the Fife area of Scotland.

Had the van for 2 years and not had this problem before.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi John,

If your fridge tripped the caravan RCD safety trip, then you have a small leakage of current to Earth - probably something along the lines of a faulty heater element or a faulty fridge switch. It's not unknown for the illuminated fridge switch to fail.

If your fridge tripped the caravan MCB high current trip, then you have a major short somewhere in either the wiring, the fridge switch, or the fridge heater. Could be that the wiring was trapped when your caravan was built and it has finally worn through the insulation - or the heater element has failed in a big way.

What checks you can do depend on your level of competence - you will need to remove the fridge to access the heater element, the switch and the wiring harness - and this means disconnection of the gas supply (usually a simple elbow joint under the caravan).

My advise would be to get a local electrician to look at it. This will possibly be more convinient and cheaper than taking it to a caravan dealer.
